WALTHAM, Massachusetts (AP) — A student died while more than twenty other passengers and a driver were injured when a bus returning from a hockey game crashed into a tree in a Boston suburb, authorities said.
Initial investigations indicate that the bus was returning to Brandeis University from a hockey game at Northeastern University in Boston around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when it crashed in Waltham near the Brandeis campus, according to a statement from Middles*x District Attorney Marian Ryan and Chief of Police Waltham, Kevin O’Connell.
One student died on the spot.
She was identified Sunday afternoon by the university as 25-year-old Vanessa Mark.
“While Vanessa was on leave, she lived in Waltham and was an active and valued member of the Brandeis community,” school president Ron Liebowitz said in a statement posted on the university’s website. “We’ve been in touch with Vanessa’s family and will be keeping in touch with them over the coming days, and we’ll keep you updated on how Vanessa’s memory is being honored.”
The university, which has about 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students, canceled classes on Monday and Tuesday, according to a statement from school spokesperson Julie Jette.
“This will allow some students to return to family and friends earlier than their normal holiday schedule would allow,” the statement read.
Bereavement counselors were available at the university’s counseling center and remained available to students on campus during Thanksgiving.
The other 26 passengers and the bus driver “suffered varying degrees of injuries” and were taken to area hospitals, authorities said. Brandeis, in a Sunday afternoon statement, said nearly all of them had been released.
No other names have been made public and no charges have been filed.
Video and photos from the scene showed the bus with severe front end damage and nearly every window smashed. A field of rubble remained at the crash site hours later.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing and police are asking witnesses to come forward.
