Three people died in a late-night shootout at the University of Virginia on Sunday, which officials say was carried out by a student, the school said on Monday morning.

Authorities continued to look for suspect Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. on Monday, whose university president Jim Ryan said he was considered “armed and dangerous” after a frenzy who also injured two victims.

The shooting started around 10:30 pm and the suspect was wearing a maroon jacket, jeans and red shoes and was driving a black SUV, Ryan said.

The university canceled classes on Monday while an on-site refuge order was still in place.

“It’s a message no leader ever hopes to send, and I am devastated that this violence has hit the University of Virginia,” Ryan said. “It’s a traumatic incident for everyone in our community.”

None of the victims have been publicly identified. Two people injured in the shooting are under medical care, the university rector said, whose announcement did not reveal their health.

“Today I have the victims, their families, and all members of the University of Virginia’s community in my heart, and we’ll be planning a shared grief as soon as the suspect is arrested,” Ryan said.

Founded by Thomas Jefferson over 200 years ago, the University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville and has over 20,000 students.
