A Louisiana jury on Thursday convicted a career criminal of raping a police informant who was sent to a pharmacy in a sting that was not monitored and not protected by law enforcement.

Jurors in Alexandria sometimes looked away as prosecutors played graphic footage of a s*xual assault that occurred when an undercover woman bought methamphetamine. She was wearing a hidden camera that recorded Antonio D. Jones forcing her to perform oral s*x on her – twice – but the device did not broadcast the att*ck in real time.

Jones, 48, was found guilty of two counts of third-degree rape. He was scheduled for trial last month but missed bail and was later captured in Mississippi.

“We believe justice has been served,” Rapides Parish District Attorney Phillip Terrell told the Associated Press. “He’s an incorrigible, violent criminal and we think the community is much safer now that he’s going to prison.”

The verdict comes two months after the att*ck on the woman was reported in an AP investigation that revealed the dangers of whistleblowers seeking to “work off” criminal charges in often loosely regulated, secret arrangements.

The woman testified against Jones during the trial, later telling the AP in a text exchange “it wasn’t easy, but it was rewarding.” AP typically does not identify victims of s*xual assault.

Despite the woman’s cooperation, she was still charged with possession of drug paraphernalia just three weeks after the assault was recorded. But prosecutors said late Thursday they planned to drop pending charges against her.

“We certainly don’t intend to prosecute a rape victim,” Deputy District Attorney Brian Cespiva said in a telephone interview.

Jones’ attorney, Phillip M. Robinson, said he would appeal Jones’ conviction, and had previously asked for a trial lapse because jurors looked away from the video in disgust. Long footage showed Jones forcing the woman into s*x as she cried and said no, and even stopped at one point to conduct a separate drug deal.

Jones is scheduled to be sentenced on December 12. Cespiva said he would ask Jones to be sentenced to 50 years in prison. Jones faces a separate trial next year on drug distribution charges.
