A man who killed a hot dog vendor in 2007 with a coffee-cup motion b*mb on the Las Vegas Strip in 2007 is escaping from prison.
Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, who was sentenced to life in 2010, was reported missing while working at a medium-security penitentiary facility in the southern desert at 7am on Tuesday, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.
But Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak said his office had been told Duarte-Herrera, 42, had been missing since “early weekend”.
“It’s unacceptable,” Sisolak said in a statement. “My office has ordered the NDOC to conduct and complete a thorough investigation of the incident as soon as possible. This type of breach of security must not be allowed and those responsible will be held accountable.
It is unclear how Duarte-Herrera managed to escape and whether he had any help. A spokesman for the Nevada Department of Corrections did not immediately request a comment from the Daily News Wednesday.
Duarte-Herrera and his co-defendant, Omar Rueda-Denvers, planted a pipe b*mb on the roof of a car in a Luxor parking lot, planning to harm the latter’s ex-girlfriend, Caren Chali, and her new boyfriend, 27. old Antonio Dorantes Willebaldo who died in the explosion.
Chali, mother of Rueda-Denvers’ 3-year-old daughter at the time, was not injured.
Rueda-Denvers, 47, is serving life in another prison in Nevada.
Duarte-Herrera is listed at 5ft-4″ and 135lb with brown eyes and brown hair. Anyone who sees him or knows where he is should call 911.
