While Dennis Eckersley prepares to retire at the end of the NESN season, many fans and media representatives pay tribute to the man who has been an integral part of the Red Sox for years.

On Monday, during NESN’s broadcast of Boston’s 4-3 win over the Rays – their 160th game in the 162-game season – Red Sox defeated Red Sox writer Alex Speier of Boston Globe offered a sincere anecdote about what Eckersley meant to his family and to baseball in Boston.

Speier began by saying that he recently visited the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown – where Eckersley is located – and that Eckersley shows up at the end of the movie that viewers watch upon arrival.

“Eck is in that last voice and talks about how baseball inhabits your soul,” said Speier. “It becomes part of who you are. And I feel like you shared it with all of us when you were at the booth when you were part of the game and it made the experience of it all richer for all of us which was just the coolest thing we could be able to share and help me to share this with my children and make it part of the friendship and family celebration of the sport.

“I can’t say enough about what it meant to me, and how much it meant to be able to share the game with you and the friendship with you.”

Eckersley was clearly touched by this anecdote.

– You mean a lot to me too. Stat Masterson, man, Eckersley said, referring to Speier’s nickname when he appeared on NESN. “I’ll miss you.”

It was Eckersley’s birthday on Monday. The former Red Sox relief team – which started broadcasting Red Sox matches in 2009 – is 68 years old.
