Bohm triple shy of cycle, Phillies beat Books 8-2 for sweep

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Alec Bohm fell just shy of a third of the cycle on Sunday with four hits in an 8-2 win for the Philadelphia Phillies, completing a four-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates .

Bohm hit his seventh homer of the season in the sixth, a single shot that gave him four hits on just five pitches and extended Philadelphia’s lead to seven runs. This was his second game with four hits in the Major, the first since taking 4 for 5 against the Washington Nationals on June 23 last year.

The 25-year-old, drafted third overall in 2018, doubled in first and singles in third and fifth. Bohm landed in an innings-ending double play in the eighth.

Nick Castellanos also had four hits, his fourth single coming in at ninth.

Aaron Nola (7-8) allowed one run and six hits with eight strikes in six innings.

Philadelphia had 18 hits to win for its fifth consecutive victory and Pittsburgh suffered its seventh consecutive loss. The Phillies have won six of the seven matches since being handed over to the Chicago Cubs in three matches between July 22–24.

Four straight singles off the ball of JT Brubaker (2-9) scored five runs. Bohm and JT Realmuto got the first two, and there was another pair of Castellanos and Bryson Stott, going into a run each. Dillon Peters replaced Brubaker, allowing an RBI singles for Matt Weirling and Odebel Herrera for a 7–1 Phillies lead.

Kyle Schwarber led the innings with his National League-leading 33rd homer, sending 441 feet into the left field bleachers.

Brubaker, who conceded seven runs on 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings, started with two straight strikeouts but conceded four consecutive hits and fell behind by two runs in the first. Bohm and Realmuto had one duet after another, and Castellanos and Stott followed with two singles.

Against Bohm, Realmuto, Castellanos and Stott were jointly 10-for-12 against Brubaker.

Cal Mitchell doubled in third for the Pirates’ lone run. Pittsburgh got a run off the ninth ball of Juris Familia, who scored a first for five in the ninth inning of Philadelphia’s 8-7 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday.
