Boston firefighters put out a four-alarm fire Saturday afternoon inside a tall building in the city under construction.

This is the second time that a fire broke out at the construction site, which is part of the Bullfinch Crossing development project.

In a series of tweets, the Boston Fire Department said it had called 1 Congress St. to report the fire. Once firefighters were on the scene, the fire was quickly converted to a three-alarm fire.

The department said firefighters had to chase the fire through several floors of the tall building as the fire was traveling through ductwork and shafts.

The department said that just before one o’clock in the afternoon, the fourth alarm sounded. It said that thousands of feet of hose lines had to be used to deliver water to various points throughout the building where firefighters were trying to douse the fire.

Eventually, the department said, firefighters had to crack open the walls to access the fire and use saws to cut the ductwork.

Firefighters were able to douse the fire by around 1:45 pm. By that time two firefighters had also been taken to hospital due to heat exhaustion, despite the commanders regularly rotating companies.

Finally, around 6.30 pm, firefighters started coming out of the building, the department said. A few companies were left to rotate and check the building for any hotspots they might have missed.

It is not clear what caused the fire or how the fire will affect construction.

The fire is the latest in a series of issues with the Bullfinch Crossing project.

In mid-July, seven people were arrested for breaching the demolition site of the Government Center garage, which is part of the project. In late June, a fire broke out on the 20th floor of OneCongress.

In the spring, the demolition of the garage resulted in the death of 51-year-old construction worker Peter Moncini on March 26, and several Issues for MBTA,
