The hashtag #BoycottWalmart is trending in the US today due to the retail giant’s restrictions against unvaccinated customers in Quebec, Canada.
On Wednesday, Walmart Canada tweeted that shoppers would have to show a vaccine passport before it would be allowed in stores in the Canadian province. This applies to all customers aged 13 years and above.
“Hello. As directed by the Government of Quebec, we will be implementing Vaccine Passport at our stores in Quebec,” the tweet read. “We ask for the patience and understanding of our customers as we continue to ensure a safe and efficient customer experience.”
Walmart also addressed the ongoing misinformation on social media that claimed plexiglass dividers were being used to separate unvaccinated customers.
“Yesterday we implemented Vaccine Passport at our store in Quebec. Some photos on social media incorrectly suggest that the plexiglass dividers at some stores are there to separate non-vaccinated customers. This is wrong. The dividers for associates When they scan vaccine passports,” Walmart Canada tweeted.
The requirement for shoppers in Quebec to display vaccination passports was announced during a press conference by Premier Francois Legault on 13 January.
“I am announcing that large surfaces, defined as 1500 square feet or more, will have a vaccine passport,” Legault said.
“Currently you need two doses, eventually three doses to be able to get into Canadian Tire [a Canadian retail store] And those places.
Some social media users used the hashtag to air their confusion over the suggestion of a boycott.
“People saying they’re going to #boycottwalmart because of the government mandate probably won’t be allowed to go to walmart anyway because they’re not following the mandate, so…,” wrote digital producer Michael Barrette.
Playwright Warren Leight tweeted, “Boycott Walmart. If they won’t let you in without proof of the vaccine, your boycott is kind of pointless.”

Walmart Canada spoke newsweek and reiterated its dedication to its customers.
It said in a statement, “Walmart is extremely proud to serve the thousands of Quebecers who rely on us every day for their goods, whether it’s groceries, general merchandise, or their pharmaceutical needs. Pharma chases through Walmart affiliated pharmacies.”
He closed by saying: “Since the start of the pandemic, Walmart has made every effort to ensure a safe environment for our customers and associates and to comply with government requirements.”
