Massachusetts voters elected Democrat and former Boston City Council councilor Andrea Campbell to follow Maury Healey as state attorney general on Tuesday night.

Just after 11pm, with 46% of the vote, Campbell won 63% of the vote, while her opponent, Republican Jay McMahon, just 37%.

“I am so ready to work on behalf of the Commonwealth of Nations and for all of you as the next Attorney General,” Campbell said in a speech on Tuesday night.

Campbell, Healey’s elected successor, was set to win the race through the tough Democratic primaries. McMahon, a conservative lawyer from Cape Cod, operated unopposed in the republican field.

“If you know me well, you know I have a deep sense of faith and I’m not ashamed to name it,” Campbell said. “My faith has allowed me to turn considerable pain into a goal.”

The Attorney General’s Race

Campbell’s campaign focused on protecting ab*rtion rights, implementing community crime prevention, strengthening state gun laws, and ensuring police accountability and transparency.

Conversely, McMahon’s campaign focused on protecting freedom of speech, freedom from immunization and mask orders, abolishing “shrine cities,” and investigating electoral fraud.

For much of the ATC race, the focus was on the hotly contested Democratic primaries, where Campbell, class action lawyer Shannon Liss-Riordan, and former deputy attorney general Quentin Palfrey fought for the party’s nomination.

During the race, they fought for funding for elections, safe places of consumption, progressive awards, and who had and did not have the necessary legal experience to become attorney general.

Then, just before the primary election, Palfrey resigned and supported Campbell, while Liss-Riordan rallied important support and committed millions of her own money to her campaign.

Ultimately, it was not enough to defeat Campbell, who won on September 6, deciding the victory.

After the primaries, Campbell far surpassed McMahon, who had trouble recognizing names, especially after Campbell only agreed to one debate.
