PROVIDENCE, RI (AP) – State Treasurer Seth Magaziner won a Congressional seat in Rhode Island, vacated by longtime US representative Jim Langevin, keeping it under Democratic control.

Magaziner defeated Republican Allan Fung, former mayor of Cranston, in the general election on Tuesday. Republican national leaders hoped to bring the state’s 2nd Congress District under GOP control for the first time since 1991.

Langevin, a retiring Democrat after two decades of representing the district, backed Magaziner to replace him in the crowded Democratic primaries.

In his winning speech, Magaziner told his staffs, volunteers and supporters that “every expert thought we were going to lose, but you never stopped believing.”

“Thank you to the Rhode Island people for their trust in me,” he said. “You have my pledge that I will fight hard for our condition. I will fight to make it easier for working people to move forward. I will fight to bring Rhode Island values to Washington.

Magaziner also congratulated Fung on his “fierce campaign” and thanked him for his career in the public service.

Warehouse has been the state treasurer since 2015.. He is the son of former Clinton administration policy adviser Ira Magaziner. He said he would protect Social Security and Medicare, fight any attempt to subvert women’s rights, work to cut healthcare costs, and turn the page on Trumpism. The stakes are high, he said, as both sides are pushing each other for control of the chamber.

Magaziner and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Fung would agree with House of Representatives leader Kevin McCarthy and far-right Republicans who are seeking a nationwide ban on ab*rtion and curtailing social security and health care. The campaign stated that Fung’s commitment to McCarthy would pave the way for Donald Trump’s return.

McCarthy visited Rhode Island to raise money for Fung, and former New Jersey governor Chris Christie visited him to show his support. Fung said he was a moderate Republican, similar to Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker – not an extremist or a “Trumpeter.” The Republican National Congressional Committee called the Magaziner “Seth’s silver spoon” and tried to portray him as the initiate who had told him everything in his life.

Fung campaigned on attracting new businesses to Cranston when he served as mayor from 2009 to 2021, creating jobs and improving schools. He said he would address inflation by reducing wastage in spending and was working on energy solutions that would lower heating bills, lower gas prices and integrate renewable energy. He was supported by business groups and law enforcement agencies.

Fung said in his speech that he and his supporters knew the campaign would be a “tough battle”, that “making history was not going to be easy.”

“Although we have not realized our common mission today, please know that I will continue to work as much as possible to make our state better for all of you and for future generations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Magaziner highlighted his successes as treasurer during the campaign, including the good financial performance of the state retirement pension. He was endorsed by firearms safety groups, RI AFL-CIO and other large unions. He said he would support banning members of Congress from trading in individual stocks and support time limits for members of Congress.
