Criminality

The man also allegedly stole the car in which he was driving when he was arrested.

Dorchester man faces criminal charges after allegedly stolen car, drunk driving and then attempting to bribe officers, Suffolk County Attorney Kevin Hayden announced on Monday.

Derek Froio, 29, was charged with acting under the influence, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, neglecting to drive a motor vehicle and bribing a public servant.

The District Attorney’s office said Saturday at around 1:57 AM Boston police responded to West Broadway in South Boston and were stopped by a man who said his car had been stolen.

The man pointed to the car that had been stopped at the traffic light at the East Broadway and West Broadway intersection. Officers approached the car and knocked on the window to warn the driver, who was later identified as Froio, the district attorney’s office said.

Froio did not appear to respond, the district attorney’s office reported. Officers opened the door and ordered Froio to park the car. Instead, he allegedly stepped on the gas and nearly hit the officers with a car.

The car traveled a few feet before coming to a stop as officers removed Froio from the car and handcuffed him, the district attorney’s office said. Officers said Froio was unsteady on his feet, gibbering, smelled like alcohol, and had red and shiny eyes.

Following the arrest, the district attorney’s office said Froio was very agitated and said, “Dad is going to kill [me]…how much is it [to] cost, 10 G?

Froio refused to undergo a breath analyzer test and resisted fingerprinting, the district attorney’s office said. During the booking process, Froio allegedly told officers, “I’ll send you both $ 5,000 to make it go away … I understand there’s a moral compass, but we all need money. It’s a vacation. “

Judge Pamela Dashiell released Froio after a personal diagnosis and ordered him to remain alcohol free, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and undergo random examinations, the district attorney’s office said. Froio is due to appear in court on December 16 for a pre-trial conference.

“As if this man hadn’t made enough trouble for himself stealing a car and driving while drunk, he added to his problems by trying to bribe himself in the situation. He’s lucky that his bad decisions didn’t hurt him or anyone else, ”DA Hayden said in a press release.
