Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, said the company saw a “huge drop” in revenues, blaming civil rights and other advocacy groups for scaring from advertisers when he moves quickly to put your imprint on the social media platform.

Many advertisers have suspended their Twitter spending as Tesla’s CEO is making radical changes to the company. Twitter workers on Friday began receiving a notice of dismissal amid reports that Musk plans to shed some 3,700 jobs – roughly half of Twitter’s employees. The cuts include staff responsible for enforcing community standards and security measures across the platform.

Previously, Musk has expressed a desire to make Twitter less dependent on ads – possibly by charging fees $ 8 monthly verification fee – as well as free “freedom of speech” on the site and eliminate bots. But Musk tweeted on Friday that “nothing has changed with content moderation” and said “we did everything we could to reassure activists” without specifying the groups he was referring to.

“Very confused! They are trying to destroy America’s freedom of speech, said Musk.

Human rights defenders urge companies to stop pumping advertising money into Musk’s pockets, arguing that his policies will fuel hate speech, including offensive and racist language and images they say have spread on Twitter since the takeover ended on October 28 . #StopToxicTwitter effortless copying.

“Within 24 hours of Musk taking ownership, the platform was flooded with hatred and disinformation,” said a coalition of activist groups in open letter to the CEOs of the top 20 advertisers on the platform. “Without Twitter’s deliberate efforts to address this type of abuse and hatred, your brands will actively support accelerating extremism.”

The group said Twitter advertisers “have a moral and civic duty to oppose the degradation of one of the world’s most influential communication platforms.” They urge companies to freeze expenses until Musk shows that he will enforce measures to preserve the fairness of the elections, including greater investment in fact-checkers and moderators.

Free Press, one of the groups, said allowing hate speech and conspiracy theories to spread on social media could have potentially dangerous real-world implications. Twitter activity has been found to cause violence, jeopardize public health, and undermine elections.

Arouse racist insults

In a media appeal on Friday, members of the activist coalition said Musk’s change of leadership coincided with a more than 1,000 percent increase in racist slander on Twitter.

“We are witnessing the real-time destruction of one of the most powerful communication systems in the world,” said Nicole Gill, co-founder of another activist group, Accountable Tech.

According to groups, ad spend accounts for 90% of Twitter’s revenue, giving advertisers the option to demand that Musk protect Twitter’s security and profitability.

Separately, researchers at Montclair State University found that 12 hours immediately after Musk took over Twitter, a lot of a more “hostile” environment on the platform. The team looked at tweets filled with “vulgar and hostile” rhetoric aimed at people based on race, religion, ethnicity and orientation, such as “na-n”, “k-word” and “k-word” to find out how much it got worse. In these terms, they found “an immediate, visible, and measurable leap.”

The NAACP also said this week that it expressed its concerns to Musk about the “dangerous, life-threatening hatred and conspiracies that have spread on Twitter” under his watch.

Firms including Audi, General Mills, GM, Mondelez and Pfizer have already stopped their Twitter ads and more big advertisers are expected to follow suit. On Monday, IPG Mediabrands sent clients a recommendation that: pause the ad on Twitter for a week, until there is more clarity about brand safety on the site.

Following an avalanche of complaints about Musk’s purchase of Twitter, billionaire Tesla CEO recently changed his profile on the platform to read the “Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator”. He listed his location as “Hell.”
