A man being dragged online for refusing to pay for his daughter’s college tuition is receiving a lot of disapproval from the internet after learning that she is going to school for a different course.
The Reddit post, titled, “AITA refuses to pay her daughter’s tuition after lying about her growing up,” has been upvoted 6,700 times with 3,900 comments. Redditor @lopside_recover109 Shared the post to the subreddit “Am I the A**hole” on June 22.
Going to college is a huge investment that some parents make before their child is born. There are prepaid college plans to help parents and caregivers pay for college for their kids over time with today’s fixed-rate 529 plan.
However, these plans are becoming a thing of the past. According to Investopedia, in 2020, only nine states offered prepaid tuition plans to new enrollees, compared to 22 states that used to have them. There is also the National Private College 529 Plan in which people can get fixed tuition rates in more than 30 states as well as about 300 private universities and colleges in the District of Columbia.
The average cost of college has more than doubled, with a growth rate of 6.8 percent per year, according to education data initiative, The average cost of in-state tuition is $9,349, while out-of-state tuition amounts to $27,023 per year. The average amount a state college student spends at an institution is $25,487 for one year.
The Redditor revealed that her 19-year-old daughter told her she was going to college and majoring in computer science, and she was reportedly “enthusiastic” about it as she set out to major in illustration instead. Was.
For years, the original poster (OP) has been attempting to “talk him out of it”. He knows he likes illustration, but added that “it’s so hard to get a steady job out of it.” He wanted him to do something in which he could be really successful.
The OP continued: “As it turns out, she lied to me. She’s majoring in illustration. She got some mail about some art exhibit at her school. I didn’t think anything of it at first.” Because I knew she was a computer science major. Looking at it a little more later, I learned that her work had been chosen to be displayed in the exhibition.”
The man admitted that he was “furious”, and that he spent “tens of thousands” of dollars for his computer science degree, as they agreed. He told his daughter that she could do whatever she wanted, but he “won’t support her.”
The man in the post suggested that his daughter could return him “for the money he stole from me, interest-free”.
In a comment, he acknowledged that he was not displeased that his work had been selected in the exhibition, and said that it was a “substantial achievement”. But he was “angry” to find out that she “went behind” his back and chose a different chief than the one they had agreed upon.
OP’s wife saying she is “unfair”, and that she is only 19 and asking him to fund her tuition is “asking her too much.” But he didn’t think so because he agreed to pay for his daughter to study computer science and “nothing else.”
The man concluded: “I was also giving her a chance to do what she did right. I was cheated on, and my money was going towards something I had nothing to say. Now my wife And Betty is upset with me. I’m starting to reflect and think maybe I could have been better about the situation.”
In a comment, he also revealed that he didn’t want him to “struggle as much” as he did. He had come to his current country from Nigeria, and admitted that he was on his own. He wanted to study animation, but his father spoke to him because if it “didn’t work”, he would have nothing to “back off”. His father finally put him on the architectural path.
“It got me more jobs than just being an amateur animator,” he said.
Various comments were made on the viral post, and people called the OP the errant in the situation. One such user said that their own father did “the same thing” to them, and they don’t talk anymore. He relayed that “trying to control” his daughter is a surefire way to lose her.
“With her work being displayed in an exhibit, if it were my daughter, I would definitely have got front row seats,” said the Redditor. “If you keep it, you [going to] Lose your daughter Apologize and start listening to what she wants, what her hopes and dreams are, then be her biggest cheerleader.”
Another user voted YTA as his decision for the OP, and he relayed that “there’s a reason he felt he had to lie about his major. Plus, you can’t save your daughter’s career that way.” Why would you even want to direct?”
One commenter thought the man “created a situation” where his daughter had to “lie” to him “to pursue her dream,” adding that “she’ll still get a degree in the end. Happy about that to you.” Should be. Keep it up, and you’ll never have a relationship with him.”
“YTA,” said another commenter. “Not just about the situation, but about your attitude too. Why would you want to crush his dreams like this and make him miserable for the rest of his life?”
Another user said the OP can’t “determine success” based on their child’s major. “Not to mention it’s a s**tty move as a parent,” he said. “You may have just said that I only love you if I can control your life.”
Some didn’t mince words, and one such Redditor called the man a “terrible parent,” and they didn’t stop there. “The fact that she’s been successful in this area is actively proving you wrong, and you’re still crazy about going after her dream, that’s exactly why she didn’t tell you the truth,” he said. “I’m surprised you didn’t extinguish the flame inside him years ago.”
Some people brought money to be in the parable. One user said, “Portrait as a chief can create many job opportunities.” “Not to mention, as an internet gig, people who can do great illustrations make big bucks.”

This isn’t the only viral moment involving family-related drama. A parent has been pulled up for not letting their daughter spend her birthday money on a book. The internet dragged a teenage father who kept his 10-year-old daughter a secret. Also, the internet scolded a man for releasing his stepdaughter’s indoor cat.
