Less than 24 hours after he defended Ime Udoka and asked why Udoka received a one-year suspension, former NBA player Matt Barnes not only retracted his statement but also took a stand against the Celtics coach.

After posting a post defending Udoka on Thursday night, Barnes said he had received a call from some who “had all the details – it [expletive] is deep. “

“I try to report and talk to the facts and honestly and clearly have to say yesterday evening without knowing all the facts,” Barnes said on Instagram Friday. – I was talking about defending Ime Udoka. After settling the facts after I spoke, I deleted what I wrote because the situation in Boston is deep, messy, 100 times uglier than any of us thought. That’s why I erased what I said.

Barnes – who contributes to ESPN’s NBA coverage and co-hosts the podcast “All The Smoke,” one of the most popular basketball podcasts – said he didn’t want to reveal exactly what he heard, but it was enough to give up his defense of Udoka.

“It’s a mess,” Barnes said. “Some things have happened that I cannot tolerate, I cannot back down, and it is not for me to tell what happened. If it works out, it ends.

When the Celtics announced their suspension Thursday night, Barnes posted on Instagram that voluntary relationships in NBA teams are “not unusual” and that it was a “terrible decision.” He also asked why Udoka received a similar suspension from Suns owner Robert Sarver, who received a one-year suspension due to stories of racist and misogynistic commentary.

However, some news has since surfaced about Udoka’s conduct. Prior to posting Barnes’ post on Friday, Shams Charania The Athletic reported that Udoka made “unwanted comments” to a woman he had allegedly had an affair with.

Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck confirmed on Friday that Udoka repeatedly violated the team’s policy, though he did not make it clear what the coach did. Nor has he pledged to return Udoka to the team as his suspension expires on June 30, 2023.
