Gibson Strike Out 10, Castellanos Homers, Phillies Beat A’z – Greeley Tribune

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Kyle Gibson scored 10 runs in seven shutout innings and bowled two hits to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.

Nick Castellanos hit his first home run for the Phillies, and Rhys Hoskins and Gene Segura hit back-to-back homers to support Gibson. Gibson (1-0) cleared 82 pitches in the double-digit strikeout game of his fourth career and went without.

Jose Alvarado dropped an RBI single from Stephen Piscotti in the eighth and made it 4-1. Corey Nebel allowed Jade Lowry’s RBI single in the ninth and released the first walk by a Phillies pitcher this season. Nebel still made his first save.

It’s a 2-0 start for the Phillies.

Who knows, maybe Bryce Harper was doing something in his pregame speech given on the field after accepting his 2021 NL MVP award from Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt. Harper ran below the usual list thanks to a season in which he averaged .309 and finished with 35 homers: wife, fan, kids, Jesus, teammates. “You guys tell us when we suck, and when we’re really good,” he told fans, laughing Harper.

Harper followed up with a walk-off explosion: “Let’s have a party on Broad Street.”

Phillies fans roar at the thought of the first championship parade for the franchise since 2008.

But first they have to make it to the playoffs. The Phillies have not made it to the post season since 2011, and ended the previous season with a 4–0 start with an 82–80 record. The Phillies started with a three-game sweep of Atlanta – and the Braves won the 2021 World Series.

Still, it’s a promising start for the Phillies, and the $179 million they spent on Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber to put some punch in the lineup quickly paid dividends. Schwarber started the day with Homer. Castellanos, who batted .309 for the Reds last year with 34 homers, 100 RBI and a .939 OPS, hit a two-run shot off Cole Irvine (0-1) in the first innings. Harper was on base after hitting the pitch.

Gibson took control from there. Wright, who pitched from a stretch, dismissed the team on 12 pitches in the third and hit sixes in three innings. He allowed a single each in the first and retired the next 14.

Hoskins hit a single shot in sixth place and Segura took his first shot of the year to lead 4–0.

on the road again

A hasn’t been home since break for spring training in Arizona. They are in the middle of a 10-game road trip, the longest to start a season in franchise history. They play three in Philly, head for four for Florida against the Rays and complete the trip with three in Toronto. Oakland’s home opener is not due until April 18.

With the A’s not expected to play in front of large crowds, manager Mark Coats said the excitement of the opening season on the road could help his team.

“The energy here yesterday was lightning. People felt it,” he said before the second straight game with more than 41,000 fans. “It’s not easy going on a 10-day road trip out of a chute. We’re essentially three playoff teams playing at the same point. ,

Putting cover

Harper led the majors in 2021 with .465 slugging percentage and 1.044 OPS, tied for the lead with 42 doubles and 84 RBIs. The Phillies raised a “Congratulations to our MV3” banner in right field during the ceremony and covered home plate with a “Bryce Harper MV3 2021” tarp. Harper won his first MVP award in 2015 with Washington.
