Internet blast for leaving daughters in busy park

A father’s parenting abilities were questioned when his wife revealed that she left their two children unattended in a busy park in a viral Internet post.

Posted to Reddit’s massively popular r/AmITheA**hole, Viral Post The title is “AITA for yelling at my husband while they wait for their grandma to drop our daughters off at the park?” and has received over 10,000 votes (97 percent upvotes) and 1,500 comments. Posted by Redditor u/Window-Flake1564, a 32-year-old mother of two, the post described what was a parent’s worst nightmare.

Describing her husband’s poor relationship with his parents – especially his father, who filed a restraining order against him in 2020 – u/window-flake1564 said that her mother-in-law (without her father-in-law) tried to see them. Had two granddaughters and sometimes took care of the children. Recently, her husband was bringing the couple’s nine and seven-year-old daughters to visit their grandmother (their mother) in the park so that he could take them to her house to visit her grandfather and he could go to work .

But before the babies were picked up, u/Window-Flake1564 said that her mother-in-law had an emergency and could no longer babysit. Unbeknownst to her, her husband had already left their two daughters unattended in the park.

“I kept calling him but there was no answer until an hour later when he told me he was already at work and left the girls in the park,” wrote u/window-flake 1564. “I panicked asking how he left them there, but he said he was already late for work and thought his mother would be there in a few minutes to pick him up.”

Commenters were quick to say that u/Window-Flake1564’s husband “abandoned” his daughters, but according to him justia, Dropping the baby requires just over an hour in a park. However, laws related to leaving children unattended for short periods of time could potentially apply in the situation described in the viral Reddit post.

According to Washington PostStates across the country have different age restrictions for vulnerable children. Although many states have no minimum age for a child to be left alone (especially home alone), others do. In Maryland and North Carolina, children must be at least eight years old to be left home alone, in New Mexico and Oregon, children must be at least 10 years old, and in Colorado, Delaware and Mississippi, children must be legal. Must be at least 12 years old to leave home alone.

Some states, like Texas did in 2021, have enacted “free-range parenting” laws, which, “To reduce fear on the part of parents who want their children to play outside and engage in chronic ‘independent activities’ without worrying it may lead to accusations of neglect.”

While u/Window-Flake1564 did not specify which state they live in, she said her husband continued to downplay his mistake, and blamed his mother for canceling at the last minute. She also said that her husband stopped talking to her, and only communicated with her through his daughters, transmitting messages such as: “Dad couldn’t sleep last night because Mom yelled at him and made him depressed.” ,” and “Dad needs a sorry to feel better.”

Using middle-aged seven- and nine-year-olds to relay messages was the final straw for many Redditors. In an explosive comment in response to u/Window-Flake1564’s original post, Redditor u/JadedSlayer clarified the passive-aggressive behavior.

“A baby is NOT your F*****G messenger or carrier pigeon,” he wrote. “No matter what, your kids are never pawns.”

In the top comment of the post, which garnered 19.9K votes, Redditor u/Parking_Initial4551 accused the children’s father of abandonment and encouraged u/Window-Flake1564 to take matrimonial and legal action.

,[Not the a**hole]—he literally and criminally left your girls in a public park and you are the one he thinks he should apologize to?,” he questioned. had one [restraining order] against him?”

He wrote, “You need a divorce lawyer tomorrow. Never leave your kids alone with this man again.”

Redditor u/passingthroughcbus told the original poster that she was lucky she didn’t have to deal with law enforcement when she arrived at the park, but she assured the mother-in-law and the rest of the viral thread’s commenters that her husband really is. A hole.

He wrote, “He’s also a s**hole for playing games and getting girls to join his fight.” “It’s called Parental Alienation and Borders on Emotional Abuse.”
