James Gunn and John Cena on Exploring a More Weak Side for Peacemaker on HBO Max Show

“But John and I talked a lot about how his bravery was the way he tried to connect with other people, how it didn’t work out, how he felt isolated. Reflecting on the series’ central friendship, Gunn continued: “I also think he is a very current character in terms of his distant belief system, and the relationship between him and Daniel Brooks’ character Leota. [Adebayo], someone who holds a completely different belief system than him.

“These two characters are very different, and that to me is the central love story of the series. It’s not a romantic love story, it’s not a sexual love story, it’s real love, as two human beings.
