Jaren Duran’s HR, 3 RBI power Red Sox beat Astros 3-2. left behind

HOUSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran made and drove home in a career-high three RBIs, and the Boston Red Sox overcame sloppy fielding for a 3-2 win over Houston on Monday night as the Astros pulled off a crucial day The moves were made before the MLB trade deadline.

Errors in the third inning saw Houston take a 2–1 lead after scoring twice.

The Red Sox are still one run behind when Bobby Dalbeck moved to fifth. There were two dismissals in the innings when Duran scored his second homer of the season 3–2 on seats in right field.

Duran, 25, got the Red Sox in the third innings when he scored a run with a ground-rule double.

Nathan Iovaldi (5-3) scored his first win since June 8 with six strikes in 6 1/3 innings with four hits and no earned runs.

Houston starter Luis Garcia (8-7) conceded six hits and three runs in seven innings for his second straight loss.

Martín Maldonado singled out with a seventh in the chase for Iovaldi. He was replaced by Jon Schreiber, and Jose Altuve fielded a double play to end the innings.

Tanner Hawk finished ninth without a score to defend his seventh.

It was a busy day for the Astros, who struck two important deals on the eve of the trading deadline. Houston acquired first baseman Trey Mancini from the Baltimore Orioles in a three-team trade, and then added catcher Christian Vazquez in a deal with the Red Sox.

Vazquez was in the Red Sox lineup before he was scratched minutes before the game. Now, with Minute Maid Park moving to another clubhouse, he will look to help the Astros make another deep playoff push.

The Astros scored 1 for 8 with runners in the scoring position playing without third baseman Alex Bregman, who went on the paternity list on Monday when his wife Reagan went into labor with their first child.

Dulbeck doubled to open the third and scored on ground-rule by Duran to put the Red Sox up 1-0.

Altuve arrived on an error by third baseman Christian Arroyo, with no dismissals at the bottom of the innings. Yuli Guriel was then reached by shortstop Xander Bogarts on a fielder’s pick, and Guriel took second and Altuve took third on an error from Bogarts in the play.

The Astros tied it when Altuve scored on a sacrificial fly by Yordan Alvarez. A double by Aldamis Diaz came forward to send Gueril home and put Houston up 2-1.

Red Sox: LHP Rich Hill (sprained left knee) was activated on Monday from a 15-day injured list, but the team did not say when he would make his next start.

Astros: RHP Lance McCullers will begin his third rehab for Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday night. McCullers, who has been ruled out for the entire season with a forearm strain, bowled 52 pitches in three innings on his last start and is expected to have a long pitch on Tuesday. … INF Taylor Jones was recalled from Sugar Land to replace Bregman on the roster.


Houston’s Cristian Xavier (6-6, 3.26 ERA) opposed Kouter Crawford (2-3, 4.15) when the series continued on Tuesday night.
