After retweeting a video of members of Israel United in Christ lining up outside Barclays Arena, Celtics guard Jaylen Brown said on Monday that does not support the group.

Israel United in Christ has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

A crowd gathered outside the Brooklyn Arena on the Sunday night before Kyrie Irving’s first game from a long suspension for linking to an anti-Semitic video shared on Irving’s Twitter account.

“My intuition when I first saw the film came from a community torn apart every day by the systemic representation of images of violence in our community,” Brown said. “So when I saw this video it struck a chord for a variety of reasons. I saw a large group of our people in our community showing support for [Kyrie] and his return”

Brown said he didn’t know what the group was when he first saw the video.

He tweeted Sunday night that he thought it was the historically black Omega Psi Phi fraternity. The men in the video were wearing purple and gold shirts, which are the colors of the fraternity.

Brown said he wanted to promote black people standing together.

“Being proud of this support, and being proud of our community for doing it, doesn’t mean I endorse or celebrate some of the things that have been done or said,” Brown said.

Brown has been open about his opinion that the terms of Irving’s return to the Nets were too harsh.

Reportedly, the Nets had a list of conditions that Irving had to meet in addition to a public apology and an indefinite suspension, which ended after eight games.

Brown said he contacted Irving as both a union member and former teammate because being “banned” from the game is “a lot”. Both Brown and Irving are vice presidents of the NBA Players Association.

“Kyrie has contributed to the game of basketball in so many ways,” said Brown. “So for him to come back and be on the dance floor last night, I thought it was something to celebrate. I thought it was something to support. The NBA and the Brooklyn Nets decided that whatever the disagreements or concerns were, of course it was dealt with and we moved on. I supported this decision.”
