Brown said he expected NBAPA to appeal Irving’s suspension “at least five games”.

Celtics star and National Basketball Players Association vice president Jaylen Brown said on Monday the players’ union was struggling with terms set by the Brooklyn Nets regarding Kyrie Irving’s return from suspension.

Irving was given six requirements to come back from a “no less than five games” suspension as a result of repeated refusal to apologize or condemn anti-Semitism after sharing a link to an anti-Semitic video on her Twitter page. He did apologize on Instagram after the networks set the terms on Thursday.

brown said the Boston Globe that based on these conditions, as well as the lack of guidelines for social media posts in the league’s collective agreement, expects the NBAPA to appeal the suspension.

“There is an interesting distinction between what someone says verbally and what someone posts as a link on the platform without any description,” Brown told Globe. “Some people will argue that there is no difference and some people will argue that there is a difference. There is no language in our CBA. There are no rules against it. This is unexplored territory for everyone, and everyone tries to distinguish between them.

Brown said the requirements Irving had to meet “seem a lot” and “many players have expressed discomfort with them.”

“[Irving] I made a mistake. He posted something. There was no distinction, Brown continued. “Maybe we can move forward, but the conditions under which it must be met to return, I think that not only speaking for me, speaking for me, speaking as vice president of many of our players, we did not agree with the required conditions for him to return …”

He also said that Irving and NBA commissioner Adam Silver will meet on Tuesday, hopefully they will explain both Irving’s future and the NBA’s policy of social media expression.

Brown stressed that although Irving made a mistake, he does not consider his former teammate an anti-Semite.

“I can’t believe Kyrie Irving is an anti-Semite. I don’t think the people in our governing bodies think he is anti-Semitic. He made a mistake, ”said Brown. “We understand from the outside how important it is to be sensitive not to tolerate hate speech or anything of the sort. It’s sensitivity to the dialect around it. We don’t want to defend someone so as not to condemn the hate speech, but I don’t believe Kyrie Irving is anti-Semitic. And let’s hope the NBA feels the same.
