It looks like Joe Thornton will not be attending San Jose Sharks training camp during the professional rehearsal.

The Sharks posted their roster of training camps on Tuesday afternoon, and Thornton, 43, was not among the 34 att*ckers listed. The Sharks, who will start their first training camp on Thursday under new coach David Quinn, also have 19 defenders and eight goalkeepers at the camp.

Thornton, 43, participated in some informal “captain skates” in San Jose this month, which has led to speculation that he may be joining the Sharks to some extent. He was skating with some of the more seasoned players back on Saturday when the team was at Tech CU Arena, which is right next to Sharks Ice.

“I think he is still solving what he wants to do and (we will) let him guide it,” Sharks CEO Mike Grier he said when asked about Thornton in the podcast “The Athletic Hockey Show.”

“I think he enjoys his time with his family and being a dad now, but he still enjoys being with the boys, so he did some exercise at the ice rink.”

Thornton has played 1,104 games in 15 years with the Sharks between 2005 and 2020 and is the all-time leader in assists (804), points per game (0.96) and plus / minus (161).

Thornton has 1,539 career points in 24 seasons of the NHL and with 1,714 career games he is second only to Patrick Marleau (1,779) on the all-time league list.

Thornton had 10 points from 34 games for the Florida Panthers last season, averaging just over 11 minutes on ice per game.

Grier isn’t sure if the Sharks WOM is in Thornton’s future, but added that he would like him and Marleau to be in the team somehow.

“I’m glad to talk to (Thornton) about (WOM). No, I really don’t know which way he wants to go or where he is leaning, ”said Grier, a teammate of Thornton and Marleau in San Jose from 2006-2009.

“But anyway, or whatever he decides, he’s definitely someone I want around the organization, him and Patty. They are two iconic players who have a lot to offer in the game, whether they are playing or when they finish playing, I definitely want to have them around to help me and be in the organization.

“So we’re going to have to see what (Thornton) decides to do. Like Jumbo, he always hits his own drum. “
