Jared Kushner on Thursday called Florida Governor Ron DeSantis a “very disturbing” policy of ferrying Texas asylum seekers to liberal enclaves such as Martha’s Vineyard.
Former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law said the flights boiled down to using people fleeing the Venezuelan dictatorship as “political men” in the culture war over immigration.
“We have to remember that these are people, these are people,” Kushner told Fox News. “So seeing them being used as political pawns is very disturbing to me.”
Although Kushner did not mention DeSantis, he may have been trying to fool a man who is widely viewed as President Trump’s Republican rival in 2024.
Kushner, who was a senior Trump adviser at the White House, credited what he called himself to the Trump administration’s successes in curbing illegal immigration
Kushner harshly criticized President Biden for undermining Trump’s border policies, which led to “the unfortunate humanitarian catastrophe that follows.”
Kushner, a former Democrat, at times held a more moderate stance on social issues than his father-in-law. But critics note that he never criticized Trump’s policy of separating migrant children from parents at the border, which immigration advocates said was even more cruel than DeSantis flights.
DeSantis unleashed a storm of controversy when he sent a plane full of Venezuelan asylum seekers from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard.
A conservative governor, who is running for re-election, says he is trying to expose northern liberals to chaos caused by what he calls uncontrolled immigration to the southern border.
But the San Antonio sheriff opened an investigation into whether Venezuelans had been tricked into boarding the plane with false promises of work and cash. A group of flight participants filed a class action lawsuit against DeSantis and states Florida.
The second flight was expected to arrive at the airport near Biden’s Delaware beach house on Tuesday, but was … scrapped without explanation.
On Thursday, the Democratic Senator said he would file a separate lawsuit seeking to block DeSantis from using taxpayers’ money on flights.
