smart water meter
not new technology

again. “‘Smart’ water meters are coming,” page A1, 16 June:

Big hoop. Morgan Hill has had “smart” water meters for years. The first thing I noticed was a lot of meters had a new “puck” shaped attachment on the lid. When I opened mine, I saw that there were wires attached to the meter. Then, I saw city employees walking around the neighborhood with metal detectors, except they were only scanning the tops of the meter boxes.

Now, they are connected via WiFi and I get phone calls and emails from out of town whenever my house starts using an unusual amount of water. This part is really good.

In the past, when I had burst irrigation pipes (rats regularly eat plastic), a neighbor would have to come over to tell me I was watering his yard (and have been for the past two weeks). Now, City tells me there’s a problem with phone calls and emails in real-time.

Trump remains a threat
for our democracy

What more evidence does this country need to conclude that Donald Trump and his henchmen deliberately conspired to reverse the 2020 election, incite riots and bring down our democracy?

Clearly, solid evidence and credible testimony from many of Trump’s former advisers, insiders, and collusion are still not enough to convince many Republicans (65%) Columnists like Victor David Hanson and Mark Thiessen with Fox News continue to grab straws and cast doubts in people’s minds that all this is a “witch hunt” and that Trump is a “victim.” That’s classic Trump.

He has been a loser in everything and knows only one thing and one thing – win at all costs using every angle and excuse, even if it means destroying people and principles. Trump and his followers are a threat to everything America must stand for.

ohio school promotes
security with guns

I want to commend Mike Devin of Ohio Gov. for signing a law making it easier for school workers To Carry Firearms on Campuses in Ohio,

My daughter is a schoolteacher in the Bay Area and she agrees that the introduction of additional weapons at her school will make her feel safer going to work. In fact, she anticipates a flood of teachers relocating from California and other states to Ohio to take advantage of this brilliant and progressive concept.

As a parent of a teacher, one can hardly imagine the possibilities. Thank you, Governor.

America can’t believe
Biden’s predictions

Does anyone have any confidence in President Biden’s policy predictions now?

The Associated Press’ Josh Bock interview reports, “Biden says recession not inevitable” (page A1, June 17) indicating his inability to lead our democratic republic.

“Inflation is temporary” suggests he is more concerned with the domestic well-being of the American public than with voting in the 2022 and 2024 election cycles.

“Putin must go” is an example of popular rhetoric and overly poor foreign policy.

His quote in interviews “people are really, really down” isn’t necessarily his job, but Biden is proving unable to cope with more than popular pronouncements.

An unfortunate problem with our democratic voting system is that it produces very low political leadership.

government should not
pay off student loans

Negotiate low or no-interest loans with an extended time frame to pay them off, but no student loan payments by the government. This is an injustice to the taxpayers who paid off their student loans.

I was 32 when I made my last payment. We don’t want to pay for people who have made poor educational decisions. The government cannot declare 18-year-olds with all the responsibilities of becoming adults, and then waive the contracts they signed as adults to receive student loans.

Taxpayer money would be better spent on a national program to improve career counseling through career education, K-12, to guide students to living-wage, high-demand, robot-proof occupations . A high priced university is not for everyone. Secondary education/training that leads to in-demand occupations is for all.

Help our children make post-secondary education/training decisions based on their tested and guided interests and abilities, and we won’t worry about future student loans either.

Trump’s Criminality
damaged democracy

Donald Trump is a criminal, plain and simple. He and his co-conspirators conspired to overthrow the government to retain power, and he and many Republicans continue to undermine the integrity of our system through inflammatory rhetoric and lies.
