Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, spends most of her time donating her fortune to organizations across the country. For Scott, whose net worth is estimated at over $34 billion according to Forbes, a few million dollars is not that significant. But for one Boston-based nonprofit, a gift of this size is huge.

National Institute of Child Health Quality he is now set to receive one of Scott’s numerous donations. The organization, which works to improve child health care nationwide and expand access to health care for communities of color, will receive $4 million from Scott to further its mission, Boston Globe reported.

This is the largest donation NICHQ has received in its 23-year history. This far surpasses the second largest gift to NICHQ, which was $100,000.

Scott announced that she is donating to NICHQ in the year last blog entry, listing the Boston-based nonprofit among hundreds of other organizations that will receive a share of its fortune. Scott said she has donated approximately $1.9 billion to 343 organizations over the past seven months that support “the voices and opportunities of people in underserved communities.”

Scott said she and her team have worked to give money to more than 1,200 organizations in total, and detailed information on each group will soon be compiled into an interactive database. Scott announced in 2019 that she would gradually give away her billions. Bezos has made similar announcement this month.

The $4 million gift represents about half of NICHQ’s annual budget Globe.

“Like most nonprofits, we sometimes struggle to survive,” Scott O’Gorman, chairman of the NICHQ board, told the paper. ‚ÄúThis money gives us space to breathe. We have a moment to pause and look at the big picture of what NICHQ wants to achieve.”

Bridgespan Group, a non-profit consulting firm, contacted NICHQ leaders in June. Bridgespan represented the anonymous donor and told NICHQ representatives to gather information on their mission and achievements for the meeting, Globe reported.

At the virtual meeting, NICHQ leaders detailed their work, highlighting expanding infant screening in many states, promoting safe infant sleep, and improving treatment for sickle cell anemia, according to Globe. Scott’s donors then asked how NICHQ was fighting systemic racism and inequalities in healthcare.

The non-profit organization waited months without a word. But chairman and CEO Scott Berns received confirmation of the donation in October, and the funds were transferred on November 1.

No final decisions have been made yet, but NICHQ could use the money for operating costs, medical journal subscriptions, data analytics software licences, employee pension contribution matching, and funding a new program examining the impact of workplace bias in healthcare organizations, the Globe reported.
