Members of a Customs-Garda team walked into the container on Wednesday, after initial detection by Revenue’s sleuth ‘Robby’ discovered drugs hidden in boxes concealed within the pouf.



The haul was composed of 60 kg cocaine, 22 kg heroin, 145 kg cannabis resin, 79 kg cannabis herb and 1 kg ketamine; All with a combined value of €9.8 million. Gardai initially believed that the cargo contained far more cocaine and was worth more than €20 million.

However, as the search continued late on Wednesday, it emerged that several parcels of drugs were cannabis products, priced at only a fraction of the cost of cocaine or heroin.



Security sources said that although the value of the drugs was much lower than expected, the seizure was the biggest in recent years and came as a major blow to the criminals involved.

“The narcotics were discovered hidden within a furniture consignment that had come from the Netherlands,” the revenue commissioners said in a brief statement on the operation. The consignment was searched with the help of Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner and detector dog Robby.

In a follow-up search on Wednesday, a team of investigators targeted a unit Rathkool, Co Dublin, where approximately 960kg of tobacco worth €600,000 was found.

Gardai and customs officials were liaising with law enforcement agencies in the Netherlands to establish more about the distribution of the drugs, while Garda members were also investigating activity around the unit in Rathkool.
