OAKLAND – Chris Bassitt threw eight sharp rounds on his return to Oakland and the New York Mets increased their lead at the NL East by defeating Athletics 9-2 on Friday night.
Bassitt (15-8), sold by Oakland to the Mets ahead of the season, shut down his old team, allowing two runs and six hits. The 2.43 ERA Bassitta in 41 Colosseum starts is the third best result for Hall of Famers Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue among players with at least 20 starts there.
“I really like the pitch, just in the aspect that I feel like a lot of guys are out of the league,” said Bassitt. “If you don’t like being in a place I feel it’s a big advantage if I like being there. I love this pitch. There are many reasons. But I like it very much. “
Bassitt, dropping 12-4 in A 2021, was swapped in early spring training for JT Ginn and Adam Oller’s lower league pitchers. Oller broke in 18 games for the A’s, going 2-7 from 6.01. Ginn is in Double-A where he has a record of 1-4 and a 5.10 ERA in 10 starts.
Bassitt got all the support he needed in three runs with Mark Vientos’ RBI single and Brandon Nimmo’s two runs single against Cole Irvin (9-12).
Eduardo Escobar put him down in fifth place when the first throw he saw sent him to the left-field spots to clear bases in his first career slam. After being on the injuries list in August, Escobar is playing his best ball in the most important year for the Mets. It hits .329 this month with seven homers and 17 RBI.
“It’s nice to have such results after working so hard every day,” he said. “But the process hasn’t really changed. I’m just glad we can go out there and win games and help the team win games.
Irvin allowed eight innings and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
A’s (55-96) set a franchise record after their 50th defeat of the season at the Colosseum, which equates to their total from the 1979 season, the only season in which they have lost 100 games. They have five home games left.
Mets hitting coach Eric Chavez was honored before the game by enlisting him in the A’s Hall of Fame. Chavez spent 13 seasons at Oakland, winning six Golden Gloves on third base and hitting at least 20 home players seven seasons in a row.
“That’s pretty cool,” Chavez said. “The story here in Oakland is pretty deep and a lot of good players have made it over here.”
A: RHP Joel Payamps was placed on a 15 day IL with a flexed lumbar muscle. … Oakland demanded INF Ernie Clement’s release from Cleveland and recalled Sam Selman’s LHP from Triple-A Las Vegas… To clear a seat for Clemens, Sheldon Neuse’s appointed infelder on Saturday morning. Neuse hit .214 with four home runs, 26 RBIs and .561 OPS in 89 games over three runs with A’s.
IN THE FUTURE
Ken Waldichuk (0-2, 7.13) starts today in A against Jacob deGrom (5-2, 2.32). In his final start, DeGrom became the only pitcher to knock out at least 13 beaters without walking in five rounds.
