Trailblazer was a word that was used by many to mourn the passing of actor Nickel Nichols, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 89. Nichols broke down barriers for black women in Hollywood when she played communications officer Lieutenant Uhura in the original “Star Trek” television series, paving the way not only for future television actors but astronauts as well. Tributes poured in from fellow artists on social media on Sunday. His “Star Trek” co-star George Takei says he will soon have more to say but he has a heavy heart. Celia Rose Gooding, who plays Uhura in the current “Star Trek”, wrote that, “She made room for a lot of us.”
