Multiple people were killed and injured in a shooting at a Walmart store in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Tuesday night, police said.
Officers entered the store less than an hour before closing around 10:12 p.m. and found the victims and evidence of the shooting, Leo Kosinski, a Chesapeake police public information officer, told CNN.
Details on the exact number of dead or injured are unlikely to be available until later Wednesday, as investigators continued to comb the store overnight for additional victims or people who may be hiding, Kosinski said. He previously said police believed the d*ath toll was “less than ten”.
Five patients were treated at Sentara General Hospital in nearby Norfolk, Virginia, a spokesperson for Sentara Healthcare said. CNN affiliated with WTKR. An update to their terms was not immediately available.
“We’re only a few hours after the initial incident, so everything is very fluid now, very new,” Kosinski said. A press conference was scheduled for Wednesday at 8 a.m. EST, the city of Chesapeake said Twitter.
The shooter is believed to be among the dead, Kosinski said, noting that none of the law enforcement officials are believed to have fired shots during the response.
Investigators believe the shooter was an employee or former employee of the store who opened fire on other employees in the break room, a law enforcement source tells CNN.

Chesapeake city officials have asked people to stay away from the store during the investigation. “Our first responders are well trained and prepared to respond; please give them space for this,” the city of wa said tweet.
“We are shocked by this tragic event at our store in Chesapeake, Virginia,” Walmart said in a statement. “We are praying for those affected, the community and our associates. We are working closely with law enforcement and are focused on supporting our associates,” the statement reads.
Joetta Jeffery told CNN that her mother, Betsy Umphlett, texted her from inside the store during the shooting, warning her that someone had opened fire.
“I’m crying, shaking,” Jeffery told CNN. “I was just talking to her about buying turkeys for Thanksgiving, and then this message came in.”
Jeffery said her mother was fine, but she was in shock and they met again.
A union center was established at the Chesapeake Conference Center, city officials He said. They ask that only immediate family and emergency contacts for people who were in the store go to the center.
The Washington, D.C., Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Field Office is assisting local police with their investigation, the Bureau of He said on Twitter.
