Officials released additional information on Monday about the fatal bus crash that occurred Saturday night in Waltham. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing. Vanessa Mark, a 25-year-old student at Brandeis University, died in the accident.

A shuttle bus operated by Joseph’s Transportation struck a tree at around 10.32pm on Saturday, the Middles*x District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office said. The bus was traveling down South Street in Waltham.

First responders found 30 passengers and the bus driver at the scene. Mark, who was one of the passengers, died at the scene. All other passengers were taken to area hospitals with varying degrees of injury. The driver, a 57-year-old man, was also taken to the hospital. At least one surviving passenger suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

The passengers on the bus were mostly from Brandeis, but there were also students from other schools on board. At the time of the disaster, the ferry was operating on a routine route from Boston and Cambridge back to Brandeis.

Reports Sunday indicated the shuttle was carrying students after they attended a hockey game at Northeastern University. Some students reported going to the game earlier in the night, but not all students were on the ferry for that purpose, Ryan’s office explained. The bus was not chartered for any particular event.

Law enforcement officers from Ryan’s office, the Waltham Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police are continuing to investigate the accident. Their work includes cooperation with the Accident Reconstruction Section of the State Police, interviewing witnesses and collecting additional evidence from the scene.

There is no evidence that the bus overturned during the accident, Ryan’s office said.

Investigators are still hoping to speak to anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information or footage of the accident. Members of the public with pertinent information are asked to contact the Waltham Police Department at (781) 314-3600.

A vigil in honor of the victims is planned for Monday evening in Brandeis.

One of the passengers, Cassidy Hanck, said CBS that the movement of the bus felt strange before the impact, and that the gas and brakes felt “touchy”.

She told the station that from her perspective, it looked like the driver had swerved off the road to avoid further disaster.

“There’s a train track ahead, and like shops, other students and stuff… he could have continued down that road or pulled off the road to try to stop the bus,” she told CBS. “We felt like we were going fast, then we hit a curb, then some bushes, then a tree at full power … a lot, a lot of blood, a lot of chaos.”

Those who knew Mark struggled with grief on Monday.

“You couldn’t spend many moments with her without smiling and laughing,” said Sam Forman, 23, from Allston Boston Globe. “Just such a bright, cheerful personality in every sense of the word.”

Forman described meeting Mark in freshman year when they auditioned for an improvisational group on campus. Mark later retired and joined False Advertising, the oldest improvisational troupe in Brandeis Globe reported.

“She’s one of the absolute few people I thought was really good,” Forman told the newspaper.

Adam Fleishaker, another friend and roommate of Mark from Brandeis, shared his memories about her in a Facebook post on Monday. Fleishaker recalled Mark’s habit of “singing” the names of people close to her, as well as her “radiant smile and captivating energy.” He added that Mark always brightened the days of those around her. She infused her graphics and false advertising with this energy.

“She had a love for people, laughter and all the simple joys of life. I was lucky enough to be her roommate and spend time laughing at memes and puns, humorously lame video games or TV shows, and expressing our affection for our other roommates,” Fleishaker wrote.

In an interview with GlobeFleishaker said he hoped that the tragic circumstances of Mark’s d*ath would not overshadow the good she brought to the world.

“What [people] what he should see is the art and life that flowed from it and the joy it brought to everyone,” he said Globe. “That’s what I want when you Google Vanessa Mark.
