Pat Cummins names Australia captain for Ashes with Steve Smith as deputy

Cummins named Australia’s new Test captain Steve Smith Returning to serve as the vice-captain for the upcoming Ashes series.

After being appointed as captain, Cummins is the first fast bowler to lead Australia since 1956, when Ray Lindwall took over the role.

The 28-year-old added: “I hope I can provide the same leadership that Tim has given the group over the years. With Steve and I, there are many senior players and some great young talent coming into this team, We are a tightly woven group.

“It’s an unexpected privilege that I’m so grateful for and I look forward to.”

He said: “I think watching Tim has probably really hit home the last few days. I think there’s a lot of pressure and responsibility to be perfect when it’s unfair. I think that’s too much to ask of someone. You have to get permission to grow.”

Smith was previously removed from captaincy in 2018 for the ball-tampering scandal, after which Paine took over the role.

After being named vice-captain, Smith said, “I am delighted to be back in the leadership of the team and look forward to helping and helping Pat in any way I can. Pat and I have played together for a long time, so we can do our part. “Knows his style well. Those are exciting times ahead as we focus on the Ashes and beyond.”
