Pictures of La Palma volcano have erupted on the Canary Islands.

A volcano erupts dramatically on the Canary Islands of La Palma, Spain, early Sunday morning.

Authorities on Sunday monitored a new stream of molten rock that has destroyed more than 1,100 buildings. Anything along the way to the lava – houses, farms, swimming pools and industrial buildings in large-scale agricultural areas – has been eaten away. The partial collapse of the volcanic cone has sent a new lava flow to the west coast of the island.

Government experts estimate that the largest flow of lava measures 1.5 km (.9 miles) at its widest point, while a new land delta is forming where lava flows in the Atlantic Ocean at 34 hectares (. 84 acres).

La Palma is part of the Canary Islands of Spain, an island in the Atlantic Ocean off northwestern Africa whose economy depends on canary bananas and tourism.
