CHICAGO (CBS) – According to police sources, a 3-year-old boy who was hospitalized in critical condition after being pulled out of Lake Michigan near Navy Pier was pushed in by a relative.
Sources told Brad Edwards of CBS 2 that police believe the child was pushed into the water by a relative.
The person concerned is now being questioned by detectives.
Police said the child entered the water along the northern end of Navy Pier around 1:00 p.m.
The boy was pulled out of the water at around 1:40 PM, and a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said the boy was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.
As reported by CBS 2’s Jermont Terry, the little boy remained in a very critical state in Lurie Monday night. Police said the little boy was still in critical condition Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, on a late Monday night, along the Northeast Navy Pier, where investigators were still focusing their attention, you could still see flickering police lights in the dark.
A few hours earlier, a crazy phone called 911. Someone noticed a child floating on their back in Lake Michigan near a column of light – and then went under the water.
The divers quickly jumped in and rescued the 3-year-old from the water.
It is unclear how the boy managed to overcome the barriers along the pier and then fall a few feet into the water.
Police initially concluded that preliminary investigations showed that the boy’s fall was accidental. But after asking questions and talking to people on or near the pier, they now say it is unclear how the baby ended up in the water – and they are not yet ready to call it an accident.
As the police sought clarity, many questions remained unanswered. Has the boy sneaked out? Most importantly, how did the child end up in Lake Michigan?
It is also unknown whether the boy hit his head on something when he fell over, or how long he was under the water before the divers pulled him out.
After the boy was pulled out of the water, police organized a crime scene along the northern end of Navy Pier, with part of the pier blocked with red tape.
Police said the baby was being cared for when it fell into the water.
Area three detectives are investigating, and police confirmed late Monday that they were interrogating an interesting person.
Radio communication indicated that the police were putting the boy’s aunt in a police car after rescuing the boy. It was unclear whether the aunt had been questioned on Monday night.
Navy Pier released the following statement on Monday evening: “Navy Pier is deeply saddened to learn of the injury to a child pulled out of the water this afternoon. We are working very closely with the Chicago Police Department when they investigate this incident. the child and his relatives. “
