Pompeo will headline for fundraising in South Carolina’s early voting

COLOMBIA, SC (AP) — Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to headline a large gathering of Republicans in South Carolina this month as he considers a 2024 White House bid that will see him as his former boss, former President Donald Trump. can stand against.

Pompeo will speak at Faith & Freedom BBQ in Anderson on August 22, according to US Representative Jeff Duncan, the host of the event.

“The tenants of faith and freedom form the very fabric of our nation, and I look forward to celebrating them surrounded by veterans, first responders, and other patriotic Americans who make our nation great!” Pompeo said in a written statement to the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Fundraisers benefiting Duncan’s campaign have long been a showcase for potential White House contenders, including South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, then-Vice President Mike Pence, sans Ted Cruz, Joni Ernst and Marco Rubio, and former United Nations Presidents Ambassadors included. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

According to Duncan, who represents South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District, the event is the largest annual gathering of Republicans in the state, typically involving more than 1,000 people.

Duncan described Pompeo’s “unwavering commitment to America’s first foreign policy and his willingness to stand up to opponents like China,” saying “Mike Pompeo is the epitome of service to the nation and the community.”

Last year, Pompeo launched a fundraiser for the state Republican Party in South Carolina, home of the first presidential votes in the South. His Super PAC, which has raised nearly $6 million, last month released a digital ad in South Carolina and Iowa — another early voting state where he’s making an appearance — touting religious freedom.

Pompeo and Pence are among former Trump administration officials attempting to position themselves in the state as Trump continues to tease a 2024 bid. Pompeo, who served as CIA director and top diplomat, remains on good terms with his former boss, continuing to defend him after the January 6, 2021 siege of the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

Pence has made several state visits recently, including last year when he gave his first public speech since leaving office. Already this year, she has given opening remarks at Christian Columbia International University, spoken at a Crisis Pregnancy Center fundraiser and outlined her policy vision for a “post-row” world.
