Popular hair product preservative potentially linked to breast cancer in black women, says new research – Greeley Tribune

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — New research has found a possible link between hair products and breast cancer in black women. The chemicals in hair products linked to breast cancer are found in a variety of products.

Doctors say that this new research should be a warning not just for black women, but for everyone.

Crystal Love has a long history of using all kinds of products on her hair.

“I used to perm my hair, I used to color my hair, all the normal things that women do,” Love said.

But, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was diagnosed with balding from chemotherapy, she had second thoughts about her haircare products.

“I’m fine, I have to focus on what I put in my body and what I put on my body,” Love said.

New research from City of Hope looked at a popular hair product preservative called parabens and compared the effects of parabens on the cells of both black and white breast cancer patients.

“We did see an increase in black breast cancer cell lines with paraben treatment, but did not see these effects in white breast cancer cell lines at the doses tested,” said Lindsay Trevino of City of Hope.

CBS3 spoke to Pain Medicine dermatologist Dr. Susan Taylor.

“There is a real need for more studies to clarify this,” Dr. Taylor said. “Ingredients have been reported in a whole host of hair and skin care products, not just for black women.”

Dr. Taylor says that everyone should try to minimize the use of products that contain parabens.

“Parbens are what we call endocrine disruptors, so they disrupt or interfere with certain hormones in the body and it is felt that this can lead to breast cancer,” Dr. Taylor said.

Luv says that she is not taking any chances and is now using only natural products.

“I would prefer to be natural and not have to worry about the other,” Love said.

Doctors say that black women have an increased risk of breast cancer, which is probably genetic. More research is needed to determine whether certain chemicals increase that risk even more.
