Princess Diana’s Top Society Wedding Appearances

Princess Diana was and remains one of the most famous women in the world.

When she married Prince Charles at St Paul’s Cathedral on 29 July 1981, it is estimated to have been visited by over 750 million people around the world.

Diana gleamed that day in a white bell-shaped wedding gown by design team The Emmanuels. Its train 25 feet long was the longest train ever worn by a royal bride.

The wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales may not have stood the test of time, but it remains one of the most-watched society and royal weddings of all time. After her engagement to Charles, Diana became an overnight sensation and was always in the limelight wherever she went and what she wore.

This immediate and lasting press attention plagued the princess for the rest of her life and was seen as a contributing factor to her untimely death in 1997.

One factor in this attention meant that Diana was often accused of concealing events. When she debuted a new hairstyle before the state opening of Parliament in 1984, there was no Queen’s speech in the newspapers the next day or the sovereign’s majestic presence at the centuries-old ceremony. Instead, he focused on a young glamorous Diana’s new hairdo.

It’s no surprise that their wedding guest outfits also often grab more headlines than bridesmaid gowns.
