A private investigator has admitted he helped “rob” the Duke of Sussex in his teens by targeting his ex-girlfriend’s phone.
Gavin Burroughs acknowledged there was a “brutal” culture in some parts of the media in the early 2000s, when he said that Chelsea Davy’s phone was under surveillance.
Mr Burroughs told the BBC documentary The Princess and the Press that Prince Harry was much more interested in him than his brother, the Duke of Cambridge, when he started working for the now defunct News of the World in 2000.
Editors told him that putting Prince Harry on the front page sold more copies of newspapers than William.
He added: “As some editors explained to me, Harry had basically become the new Diana.”
The BBC says Mr Burroughs is a witness in legal cases against News of the World and The Sun, but his claims are highly disputed and have yet to be tested in court.

Mr Burroughs told the BBC documentary: “There was a lot of voicemail hacking going on, there was a lot of surveillance work going on on his phone, on his com.
“Chelsea used to brag to her friends when she went to see him.”
He said investigators were interested in her medical records, ex-boyfriend and details of her Education,
Mr Burroughs said he was “very sorry” for his actions.
“I was greedy, I was in my cocaine, and I was living in a fake state of grandeur,” he said.
Speaking about the “brutal” culture in the media, he said: “They have no morals – they have absolutely no morals.”
“I was basically part of a group of people who robbed him (Harry) of his normal teenage years.”
Prince Harry and Chelsea met in early 2004, when she was a boarder at Stowe School.
The pair reportedly reunited, once again, until May 2010, when Chelsea announced the end of the relationship on Facebook.
