Proffer has 4 hits, Padres beat MadBum, Diamondbacks 10-4

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Jurikson proffer scored four hits, two runs, and scored twice for the San Diego Padres, who leapfrogged Madison Bumgarner in a 10-4 victory for a three-game sweep against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday .

Jorge Alfaro, whose walk-off single in the 10th inning gave the Padres a 3-2 win on Tuesday night, hit a single homer in the sixth. Rookie Jose Azocar cycled home runs short in the three-hit game of his first career.

Padres All-Star slugger Manny Machado missed his third straight game with a sprained left ankle, but manager Bob Melvin returned after missing 11 games in COVID protocol.

Bumgarner (3-8) scored his 2,000th strike out in his career, but it was a tough day for the 32-year-old left-hander. The Padres went 4–0 after the first innings and 6–0 after the second to give MadBum their fifth loss in six starts.

Adrian Morjon (1-0) took 1 1/3 innings to win and Nick Martinez made the final 3 2/3 for his first save. Martinez also made two mistakes.

Proffer had four straight singles and then a pitch from Caleb Smith in the seventh hit the back of his left thigh. The professor angrily tosses his bat and it drives the mess almost all the way to first base.

The proffer, the leadoff batsman, reached and scored runs in each of the first two innings. The Padres scored four runs in the first two outs. Austin Nola followed with two runs, a base-loaded single, and Trent Grisham and Ezocar hit an RBI single.

Luke Voight hits an RBI single in the second and another run off Alfaro’s double-play ball.

Proffer hit a two-run single in the fifth with two outs.

White whispered in the fourth and gave Bumgarner 2,000 strikeouts for his career. Bumgarner lasted only four innings, including six runs, four earned and four hits. He hit five and no one moved.

San Diego starter Mike Clevinger, making his first start and second appearance after coming off the COVID injured list, also went in four innings. He allowed one run and four hits, while scoring two and two off three. He bowled 29 pitches in the first innings of 20 minutes and loaded the base with an out but got out of the jam.

Arizona’s Alec Thomas made a deep impression in his fifth, third-place right field seats. Christian Walker dismissed Nick Martinez in the seventh, 19th with two outs.

Bommel is back

Melvin returned to the dugout on June 11 after being sidelined by COVID protocol since the second game of the doubleheader. Melvin says he has been asymptomatic for the past nine days. In the absence of Melvin, the Padres went 6-5. Quality control coach Ryan Flaherty managed 10 games in Melvin’s absence and bench coach Ryan Christensen was dropped from protocol to manage Tuesday night. Christensen went into protocol at the same time as Melvin.
