Proud Boys, Counter-Protesters Struggle at 1/6 Vigil outside New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral

A video shows members of the right-wing group Proud Boys clashing with counter-protesters outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan’s Upper West Side neighborhood on January 6 in New York City.

The video begins with women in coat and bean singing on the cathedral’s front stairs, holding foil-lined bowls with candles inside.

Counter-protesters, standing on one side of the cathedral’s entrance, chant “What’s the noise? F*** the proud boys”.

One of the counter-protesters has a sign that says, “God hates fascism,” an acronym for fascists. Two other counter-protesters hold a sign bearing the name of the organization United Against Racism and Fascism NYC.

Some proud boys, dressed in yellow and black, stood on the opposite side of the entrance to the cathedral, shouting “USA!” While chanting Back to the defendants.

As an opponent approaches the Proud Boys, several Proud Boys gather around him. Everyone starts shouting at each other. One of the protesters wears a “Latinos for Trump” hat.

Several proud boys then shout and grab the protester’s arms. The other person starts yelling, “Yo, wait! Brother, brother, wait!” As soon as the caught man begins to wave his arms and fists.

As the captured man runs away, a police officer then steps between the protesters and counter-protesters. The man caught takes off his hood and says, “What’s up, boy?” Proud boys.

The two groups then retreat to their respective sides of the cathedral’s front steps.

As a police officer talks to the man caught, the man raises both his open palms and says, “I didn’t put my hand on him.”

“I understand,” responds the officer.

In a second video, counter-protesters asked the Proud Boys, “Hating Jews doesn’t spoil you?”

“Who hates the Jews?” One Proud Boy replies. “We have a black Jew in our f***ing chapter. So, man. And he’s gay.”

One of the protestors laughs.

“My hand to God!” The proud boy continues, raising his hand as if testifying in court. “A Black Gay Jew in Our F***ing Chapter.”

When a defendant begins to ask for a member’s name, Proud Boy replies, “Mark.” When the respondent again asks for the member’s name, Proud Boy once again answers “Mark.”

“You f***ing thought I was going to visit?” Proud Boy asks. “No tripping with us.”

Another Proud Boy member further shouts, “My lawyer is a Jew.”

The protester replied, “I wasn’t trying to annoy you… I was trying to ask you for more. I mean I don’t think you can.” She Dumb. I think you’re pretty s*** dumb though.”

Several Proud Boys were arrested and charged in connection with the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. The Proud Boys arrested include Ethan Nordion, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl, Charles Donohoe, Isaiah Giddings, Brian Heelian and Freedom Y.

The Proud Boys position themselves as an anti-feminist male group. Although Proud Boys leader Enrique Tario has claimed that it is not a white supremacist organization, a former member, Jason Kessler, helped organize the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in which neo-Nazis and white supremacists ran away.

Tario himself was arrested on January 4, 2021, for tearing down and burning a Black Lives Matter (BLM) banner at a historic Black church in the nation’s capitol during a rally in support of then-President Donald Trump.

Tario publicly acknowledged destroying the banner, saying, “So let me make it simple. I did it,” adding, “I’ll do it again… Ayo… pass me the lighter.” “

Before the January 6, 2021 riots, Tario asked fellow Proud Boys to wear covert outfits for the day’s rallies and to join “small teams” at the nation’s capitol.
