The former Patriots’ offensive coordinator has a 2-7 record as head coach of Las Vegas.

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels during the first half of the NFL preseason football game against the Minnesota Vikings, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2022.

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels received a vote of confidence from team owner Mark Davis at a press conference earlier this week.

Davis said McDaniels is doing a “fantastic job” and expects McDaniels to return next season.

FROM McDaniels record in Las Vegas sitting at 2-7, there was skepticism as to why his performance should be described that way.

According to Bill Plaschke of Los Angeles Timesthe reason the Raiders keep the McDaniels is more money than results.

“I’m saying now: Josh McDaniels will be the coach this year and next,” Plaschke said during ESPN around the corner on Tuesday. “The invaders have no money to release him, to pay him back. They’re out of cash.”

McDaniels, who spent more than a decade as offensive coordinator under Bill Belichick in New England, is in the first year of a four-year contract with Las Vegas.

Since McDaniels left, both the Raiders and the New England offensive have taken significant steps backwards.

McDaniels took over the Las Vegas team, which went 10-7 and made the playoffs before falling to Cincinnati in the Wild Card round.

A little more than halfway through this season, the Raiders have already equaled the number of losses from last year.

The Patriots have found a way to maintain a winning record without McDaniels, but this is despite the offense, not because of it. New England ranks 26th in total yards per game. Point guard Mac Jones is ranked 28th in the league in QBR and has seven interceptions and four touchdowns.

If McDaniels can’t turn things around in Las Vegas, his success in New England will make it a logical choice to come back and fix the Patriots’ offensive

However, the Raiders appear to be willing to stick with it for a while, and such an encounter is unlikely to happen for at least another year.
