On the New England record of 5-4 coming into the farewell week there were some good and some bad.

How is more than half of the Patriots season going? It seems they opened a losing season in Miami a month ago where an offensive game plan seemed to be built around Mac Jones throwing 50-50 balls.

Nine matches and, well, Matt Patricia’s offensive game plans are still ongoing. When coach Bill Belichick admitted on Tuesday that the last two opposing defenses had triggered some Patriot games it was more of a relief than a shock.

It turns out that the first step to improving your offensive isn’t getting better blocking or playing smarter with your playmakers, but not telegraphing your intentions to those who try to stop you. Who Knew?

Yes, it was a weird 9/17 season. On their record of 5-4, when they go into the farewell week there have been some good and some bad.

Pros: Rhamondre Stevenson has proven to be a spectacular three-time runner. Matthew Judon heads the summit Andre Tippett. Novice class was excellent despite the last few in-game meetings by Cole Strange in the first round.

The bad: Many factors led to Jones regression in his second season. Patricia has tried to make the most of talented players such as Hunter Henry and the occasional doghouse resident Kendrick Bourne. And with 17 losses, second in the league, they failed to defend the ball properly.

All in all, this has led to a season that is moderately encouraging but not very exciting. That might change with the Vikings, Bengals and the Bill duels to come, but so far this season has been as fun as watching a rerun of Season 8’s “The Office” You know, it’s gonna be some giggles and good times, but this it’s not what it used to be.

When it comes to sports, here’s a ranking of the nine Patriots games based on entertainment value, from worst to best. Even with the greater weight of the winnings, they were surprisingly difficult to classify …

no 9

Week 1: Dolphins 20, Patriots 7 – Fast, who scored the first Patriots touchdown of the season? If you said You Montgomery, well done, your memory has fewer clouds than mine. His catch from 6 yards on a touchdown came in the third quarter when the Patriots had already lost 17-0 in a game that foreshadowed some of their current problems. The promising first possession of the season broke down as Jones made a late-zone interception on an alley-oop to DeVante Parker and the offensive line play was lumpy at best, with Trent Brown and Strange missing the job that led to Brandon Jones. strip-sack and Melvin Ingram regaining landing position.

no.8

Week 9: Patriots 26, foals 3 – There’s no need for a deep revision here, is there? We just watched it a few days ago and it was as impressive as Judon, Josh Uche and nine-bag infernal passing fever against Colts who wasn’t ready by 1pm – Sunday-not-sam- prime-time quarterback Sam Ehlinger, all the game was tough and Jones (147 yards passed) was still looking for his first outstanding performance of the season.

no.7

Week 7: Bears 33, Patriots 14 – It was fun, I suppose. Only in all the wrong ways. It was more a spectacle than a soccer match. Belichick waited until the game to reveal his starter, went with Jones, then yanked him behind Bailey Zappe after a fatal raise in the second quarter. Switcheroo calmed down the crowd at Gillette’s stadium, who chanted the name of the substitute early in the game, but it wasn’t the best way to welcome Jones back from his injury. Zappe had a few glimpses of magic in the beginning, but the Bears – which averaged 15.5 points per game – took the last 23 points and their second-year quarterback Justin Fields broke through the Patriots’ defense for 82 of the 246 Bears. rushing yards.

number 6

Week 2: Patriots 17, Steelers 14 “I don’t recall that – a rare” must-win “in the second week of the Belichick Era – it’s so close, possibly because Mitchell Trubisky and the Steelers att*ck could only score 243 yards. But the Patriots did not secure the victory until Damien Harris, 5 yards, ran in third and third with 1 minute and 38 seconds left. It’s fair to say that this will be considered Nelson Agholor’s best play in the Patriots uniform. He caught all six of his 110-yard targets and took a spectacular 44-yard touchdown right before the break.

No. 5

Week 3: Ravens 37, Patriots 26 – No, not the result you’re looking for, but it was entertaining games and for a moment there was hope in the Patriots opening house. They only lost 14-13 on the break before it got, oh, let’s call it chaotic. Lamar Jackson, arguably the most electrifying player in the league, joined the game in the second half, ending with four touchdowns passing, one touchdown in a hurry and a total of 325 yards. The Patriots totaled 447 yards, still achieving their highest score of the season, but the last three climbs ended with a Jones interception … and then he damaged his ankle at the end of the fourth quarter, putting his season into – yes – chaos.

no 4

Week 8: Patriots 22, Jets 17 – JETS suffered their 13th loss to the Patriots, and for Jets fans whose repertoire of spelling-bee is limited to one word, I write “loss” there. It’s nice to be able to help. In fact, your talented young team is making Patriot fans a bit nervous with the Week 11 rematch. Sure, that was a satisfying Patriot win – all victories over the Jets are satisfying, especially for Belichick – but the path wasn’t exactly an exciting ride. Kicker Nick Folk saved several sputtered att*cks with five outfield goals, the Patriots used Zach Wilson’s approach to playmaking, and the Jets penalty canceled Michael Carter’s 84-yard pick-6 that would have altered the score. tenor games.

no 3

Week 4: Packers 27, Patriots 24 (OT) – Hey, remember when we thought the Packers were good? Despite losing a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter and losing in extra time in Mason Crosby’s 31-yard field, it seemed like a moral victory at the time. When Jones was out and Brian Hoyer was out of a concussion in the first quarter, fourth-round rookie Zappe stepped in and sowed the seeds of quarterback controversy, playing with balance, making 10 out of 15 passes for a modest 99 yards. In defense, the bullying of Aaron Rodgers in the first half was a lot of fun. The Patriots held him to the four finished before the break, with rookie Jack Jones scoring a pass just before the break and scoring 40 yards for a touchdown. But the Packers have lost five in a row since that game, so this moral victory has become something of a “what if”.

no 2

Week 5: Patriots 29, Lions 0 – The fact that the Patriots would have won easily in retrospect seems obvious. And I doubt that many, if any, among us would think that Lions coach Dan Campbell was ready for a wits coach duel with Belichick considering that Belichick tactically plays chess while Campbell plays … I don’t know, WWE 2K22 or something. It is worth recalling, however, that there was real tension at stake. The Lions averaged 35 points per game. Zappe was starting for the first time. And at ages 1-3, the Patriots couldn’t afford to let this slip slip away. Certainly not, since Lions quarterback Jared Goff looked as confused as Rams quarterback in Super Bowl LIII, and Stevenson ran 161 yards out of 25 leads, both were the best of their career.

No. 1

Week 6: Patriots 38, Browns 15 Why is this the most fun and rewarding Patriots game this season so far? Let’s count the ways. Even skeptics caught Zappe Fever after rookie QB made 24 of 34 passes for 309 yards – still the best Patriot playmaker of the season – and two touchdowns to lead the Patriots to their second consecutive victory. The defense picked up two passes and recovered some fumbles while cutting back NFL frontman Nick Chubb to 56 yards out of 12 passes. Rising star Stevenson proved to be the most impressive back-to-court run, running through a fierce 76-yard fight and a pair of touchdowns on 19 tries. What else? Oh, and rookie Tyquan Thornton scored a touchdown and touchdown in a hurry, that last shot from 19 yards that nearly secured the victory in the fourth quarter. All in all, it was a nice day. The best they’ve had this season.
