Russian forces att*cked hospitals and fired on a humanitarian organization from the Vatican in Ukraine over the weekend, fueling fears that Moscow would step up att*cks on civilian targets because it would suffer military defeats.

Retreating Russian troops leave evidence that occupation forces tortured civilian prisoners, Ukrainian officials said.

Ukraine’s major counteroffensive allowed its forces to reclaim large swaths of territory in the northeastern Kharkiv region bordering Russia last week, putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has vowed to step up his war effort.

Russia may escalate att*cks on civilian targets as it is defeated on the battlefield, the British Defense Ministry warned on Sunday.

“In the past seven days, Russia has increased its targeting of civilian infrastructure, even where it probably does not see an immediate military effect,” the ministry said in an online briefing.

“In the face of the setbacks on the front line, Russia has probably expanded the places it is ready to strike in an attempt to directly undermine the morale of the Ukrainian people and government,” he added.

According to local officials, on Saturday four medics were killed as a result of the Russian att*ck while trying to evacuate a psychiatric hospital in Kharkiv region. Two patients were injured in the att*ck.

As the region’s governor informed, the night shelling hit the hospital in Nikolaev, the main port of the Black Sea.

A Vatican’s top envoy and entourage said on Sunday as they handed out humanitarian aid near the city of Zaporizhia. No injuries were reported.

“For the first time in my life, I didn’t know where to run. Because it is not enough to run, you have to know where to go, ”said the Vatican Cardinal Almoner Konrad Krajewski, who was among those forced to hide.

In connection with the hasty withdrawal of Russian troops from the Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian authorities announced last week that they had found a makeshift prison in which prisoners were used in the village of Kozacha Lopan. Ukrainian forces recaptured the site just over a mile from the Russian border on September 11.

More than 10 “torture chambers” have been discovered, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.

Ukrainian authorities released photos of Soviet-era military telephones with extra cords and alligator skin clips, which they say Russian forces used to shock prisoners during interrogations.

Zelenskiy said in Saturday night’s video speech that “a torture chamber and electrical torture devices” were also found at Kozacha Lopan train station.

“Torture was a common practice in the occupied territory,” said the Ukrainian president, comparing the Russians to the Nazis of World War II.

“They will respond in the same way – both on the battlefields and in the courtroom,” he added.

Zelenskiy said the b*rial sites in some areas from which Russian forces were pushed – for example in the city of Izium, where more than 440 graves have been found – contain the bodies of adult civilians, children, and soldiers, showing signs of violent d*ath.

The Ukrainian counter-offensive to recapture several Russian-occupied cities and villages marks Moscow’s greatest military defeat since its forces were pushed away from areas near Kiev at the start of the invasion that began on February 24.

The Ukrainians, who were returning home to the reclaimed border areas, found their houses b*mbed and burned, their streets destroyed with mortar shells and strewn cars strewn along the roads.

56-year-old Larysa Letiucha, who left the village of Prudyanka with her family in April, said that she came back to discover her home, and that her parents were a “horror” of broken windows, yawning holes, debris and debris. The entire back of her parents’ house was destroyed and missing.

“I still can’t pull myself together,” she said. “We’ve invested our entire lives here.

“I don’t even know when we will renovate and rebuild it all,” she added.
