SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Carlos Rodone scored more than 10 runs in seven major innings amid speculation he could be traded, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0 on Sunday night.
Rodden (9-6) was helped quickly by his defense. Left fielder Luis González reached the wall of the outfield to trap Christopher Morrell’s leadoff drive, and center fielder Austin Slater caught a hard-hit ball from Nelson Velázquez after an innings.
Then Rodan took over. He scored two runs in the second innings, then dismissed the team in the third and fourth innings. He gave away two hits, none after the third innings. It was his 18th double-digit strikeout performance of his career and his sixth appearance of the season.
San Francisco scored all their runs in the fourth inning by rallying against starter Adrian Sampson (0–2) with two outs. Eighth-placed hitter Jason Vosler took an RBI single, followed by a base-loaded triple from number 9 hitter Austin Wyens.
The Giants won three of four games in the series, marking their eighth consecutive home series win over the Cubs.
Cubs first baseman PJ Higgins, chasing a foul ball in the seventh inning, slammed his right hip into the railing of an oddly shaped photograph. He shook off and consulted a team trainer before continuing in the game. After an innings he made a diving stop on Slater’s grounder.
Giants, Cubs Engineer Swap
San Francisco acquired infielder Dixon Machado from the Cubs on Sunday for right-hander Renelle Espinal.
Machado, who appeared in 172 games for Detroit from 2015 to 2018, quickly entered the Giants’ starting lineup at shortstop. Injuries to Brandon Crawford (left knee) and Thario Estrada (concussion) left San Francisco particularly thin in that position.
The Giants hired right-hander Tobias Myers to clear the roster room for Machado, 30.
Estrada, who replaced Crawford, went on a seven-day injury list after being hit by a pitch on Saturday night.
Cubs: LHP Wade Miley (shoulder) threw a bullpen mound on Sunday and could be ready for injury rehabilitation this coming week.
Giants: Crawford, who is in his third stint at the IL this season, will need a short injury rehab assignment – about four games – before returning to the lineup.
The Giants begin their four-match series against their rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park on Monday. Legendary right-hander Logan Webb will be up against Dodgers lefty Andrew Heaney.
Following Monday’s scheduled off-day, the Cubs will play a three-match series in St. Keegan Thompson of Chicago and Adam Wainwright of St. Louis will meet in a matchup of right-handers.
