YSI programs

Great news for aspiring environmental scientists in South Bay: Santa Clara County Board of Trustees has re-teamed with the nonprofit Youth Science Institute to run educational programs at two local parks. The programs will continue for the next five years at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos and Sanborn County Park in Saratoga.

A renewed partnership took effect last month with the county providing amenities and instead of renting YSI is offering some of its programs free of charge to children and families in both locations.

Open warming centers

In the face of the coming cold, the Santa Clara County Crisis Management Office offers warming centers – often public buildings such as libraries and community centers – for residents who do not have reliable access to shelter and warmth during extreme weather conditions. During these hours, the Valley Transportation Authority offers free bus travel to approved warming centers. For a complete list of these centers, please visit or call 408-385-2400.

Water consumption is falling

After surpassing its water conservation target in the following months, Santa Clara County fell just below 15% of Valley Water’s September target. According to Valley Water, water consumption across the county was down to 13% compared to the same period in 2019. In September 2021, residents and businesses saved just 7%.

As the rainy season progresses, Valley Water reminds residents to turn off irrigation systems. Under the new outdoor irrigation restrictions, residents and businesses are not allowed to water landscapes during and 48 hours after rainfall. Repeated violations may result in fines.
