Seahawks work with linebacker Ruben Foster who hasn’t played since 2018

With one open position on their roster, the Seahawks reportedly took 31 on Sunday, a former first-round pick-linebacker Ruben Foster.scheduled tribe Overall by the 49ers in 2017.

Foster has not played since the 2018 season, battling a knee injury and some legal issues. But according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Foster is healthy and is hoping to “start his comeback” with a tryout with the Seahawks as one of the first steps on that road to getting back in the league. He reportedly worked out with Miami in April.

After starting 16 games in two seasons with the 49ers in 2017 and 2018, Foster was released in November, 2018 following an arrest for domestic violence. He was suspended for the first two matches for violating the league’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies.

Washington claimed Foster, and the domestic violence charge was dismissed. But he suffered a torn ACL during an off-season workout in 2019, which sidelined him in 2019 and 2020, and he did not play in 2021.

Foster is just 28 years old, one reason the Seahawks are certainly ready to at least kick the tires on him and see if he can recapture the potential he showed during a standout career in Alabama, which included college football. Including winning the Butkas Award as Best Linebacker. as a senior in 2016.

Foster, a native of Auburn, Alabama, chose Alabama on a list of schools that included a proposal from the University of Washington and then-head coach Steve Sarkeesian. He made an official visit to UW in January 2013 before signing with Alabama.

“I took them seriously. Very seriously,” Foster said of UW in 2016. “The relationship (with the UW coaches) was great. I think they took me in and all that, but I’m in ‘Bama’ here.

Foster was drafted by the 49ers with a pick received from the Seahawks, moving three places from 34 to 31, with Seattle going down from 26 to 35 that season and taking on Malik McDowell. Submitted four other pics. way (one of the challenges turned out to be to drive Chris Carson back).

Foster made the all-rookie team in 2017, but was battling shoulder and hamstring injuries playing just six games before his release in 2018.

Foster has played primarily as an inside linebacker during his career. The Seahawks appear to be set in positions with Jordan Brooks on the middle linebacker and Cody Barton on the weak linebacker.

But the linebacker’s depth is a bit uncertain with the Seahawks keeping Ben Burr-Kirvin on injured reserve last week, and John Rattigan still on the physically unable performance list with a knee injury.

The Seahawks have an open roster spot after guard JR Sweezy – who signed a formal one-day contract on Friday to retire as the Seahawks – was officially placed on the reserve/retired list on Saturday.

The Seahawks were closed on Sunday but will return to practice on Monday afternoon.
