12:35, Race 1 – Maiden Special Weight (1 1/16 mile, Turf)
Joel Rosario delivers one great ride after another at the Saratoga Turf Race. His first appearance on RED ROUTE ONE points to the Steve Asmussen-trained son of Gun Runner. Colt’s full brother won the Texas Turf Mile for Asmussen this year. MULLINGAR lands from dirt for Hall of Famer Bill Mott and is well-raised for grass. The First Battle of Normandy was bought for $500K and the turf has been worked on.
Tips: (5) Red Route One Trifecta: 5 – 4 – 7
1:08, Race 2 – Maiden Claiming (7 furlongs, dirt)
AFILADA took a solid second on their first start with a claim. Graduation day can happen after six in-the-money runs out. TEKILA makes its third start to the year after a long layoff and has shown more opening momentum than any other entrant. After posting speed figures on the turf Carlos Martin claims mostly harmless is dangerous.
Suggestion: (6) Affilada Trifecta: 6 – 8 – 5
1:44, Race 3 – Allowance Optional Claim (6 furlongs, dirt)
Khali Magic has already won the track and should have enough momentum to set up his late kick. Linda Rice is very capable of winning a layoff that makes the beautiful Karen dangerous, especially with the name Irad Ortiz to ride. MOSIENKO finished second behind Khali Magic in their final – short distance and maybe a different strategy could turn the table.
Tip: (2) Khali Magic Trifecta: 2 – 8 – 7
2:18, Race 4 – Allowance Optional Claim (1 mile, turf)
Dreams work and eyes on target make a powerful entry. DreamWorks makes its first US debut and Chad Brown accounts for 37 percent of overseas shippers; Eyes on Target finished a close second in a similar race at Belmont outside past. Longshot FAMISHED is in top form and looks like value play here. Good Governance broke his first wife here three years ago and never ran a bad race.
Suggestion: (1A) Dream Works Trifecta: 1 – 5 – 2
2:50, Race 5 – Lure Stakes (1 1/16 mile, Turf)
SOMELIKEITHOTBROWN won the Grade 2 stakes at this distance in Saratoga two years ago. He was cooked up in a speed duel on his last start in Indiana, but must lead the group from start to finish. The public sector won Grade 2 and 3 stakes in Saratoga last year and got an inside draw. The main threat to the top choice looms. South Bend could break into the top three with Rosario.
TIP: (8) SomeliKithotbrown Trifecta: 8 – 1 – 3
3.24, Race 6 – Maiden Special Weight (7 furlongs, dirt)
Point proved worked fast on the track last week. The Todd Plechter-trained firstr was bought for $675K and seems primed to win at first. Rocket Cane, coached by Bill Mott, is also training in Saratoga and Into Mischief’s son has done some fast work. DISARM rallied for Steve Asmussen in the short distance at Churchill Downs early in his career.
TIP: (1A) Point Proven Trifecta: 1A – 6 – 2
Bet on the game?
3.58, Race 7 – Glens Falls (1 miles, Turf)
In a race lacking in speed horses, the VIRGINIA JOY can move quickly and jump over the favorite WARLIKE GODDESS. Virginia Joy beats a four-horse field in such a way that two back starts. Jangi Devi easily won the race last year and should do so again if the top choice doesn’t steal it at the front end. TEMPLE CITY TERROR finished third in this bet last year and should get a piece of the purse.
Tip: (2) The Virginia Joy Trifecta: 2 – 6 – 1
4.34, Race 8 – Allowance (7 furlongs, dirt)
St. Tapit ran like the horse of the future in his debut for Todd Plechter. He should be even more formidable with a race under his belt. The money supply was blocked during his last visit to Churchill Downs. Chad Brown is 43 percent when taking out the blinkers and this colt must be flying late. PRINCE OF PHAROAHS do their best on the front end and can set the pace here.
Suggestion: (8) The Saint Heated Trifecta: 8 – 7 – 4
5.07, Race 9 – Test Stakes (7 Furlongs, Dirt)
This annual sprint wager attracted an unusually modest field. MATAREYA dominated the competition after winning three consecutive bets including Grade 1 Acorns. Wish You Well showed serious talent on her debut, then stumbled after a poor start at Churchill Downs Slope. Well done since the disappointing outing for trainer George Weaver. The Chi Town Lady could rally for part of the purse in an area with a predominantly speed horse.
Suggestions: (1) Matreya Trifecta: 1 – 4 – 7
5.43, Race 10 – Whitney (1 1/8 mile, dirt)
Todd Plechter has half the entrants in this six-horse field, with no one better than life. The 4-year-old colt won the Pegasus Invitational at this distance this winter and should be able to control the pace from start to finish. The Olympiad has continued to win five races in this Grade 1 event, but has not faced an opponent like Life Is Good during that time. AMERICANREVOLUTION won a stakes race here last year and finished second behind the Olympiad in his last outing.
Suggestion: (6) Life is Good Trifecta: 6 – 4 – 1
6.20, Race 11 – Saratoga Derby Invitational (1 3/16 mile, Turf)
The Classic Causeway showed an affinity for the grass as they beat a good portion of the ground by a 26-1 margin. Rated 8-1 in the morning line, the frontrunner may be in for another surprise. STOLEN BASE did not race in the same race, but won Grade 2 in his previous outing. A shocker can pull over large obstacles. The Annapolis firm turf is 3-for-3 on the course and will be tough if the grass isn’t wet.
Tip: (9) The Classic Causeway Trifecta: 9 – 5 – 6
6.53, Race 12 – Maiden Special Weight (1 1/16 mile, Turf)
Action Jackson makes his first start of the year thanks to new trainer Jorge Abreu. Has posted a series of works on the Saratoga Turf Course and lifts Flavian Pratt Mt. Dreampoint is 0-k-17 but Joel Rosario gets switched aboard. Your mission is to finish second at the start of the season and draw the rails for Todd Placher.
Tips: (4) Action Jackson Trifecta: 4 – 8 – 2
