The 2022 Tundra capstone is Toyota’s new, high-powered hybrid luxury truck

It’s just starting to roll off the production line and already Toyota is making changes to its recently redesigned third-generation Tundra’s lineup. The automaker has rolled out a new, range-topping version of the model, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone.

The 2022 Tundra Capstone sits above the Tundra SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 and TRD Pro in the company’s full-size truck trim lineup. The high-end model will compete directly with the Ford F-150 Platinum, Chevrolet Silverado High Country and Ram 1500 Limited Longhorn.

The new Toyota truck will only be offered with the company’s high-horsepower i-Force Max hybrid engine, which is currently an option on the Limited, Platinum and 1794 grades. The Tundra TRD Pro also comes standard as a hybrid.

Toyota has mated a twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.

The new truck will only be offered with a crew cab and a 5.5-foot bed.

Toyota has standardized the towing technology package on the Tundra Capstone. This allows a 360-degree view of the truck and trailer. When paired with the integrated trailer brake controller, the truck’s blind spot monitoring system can recognize the dimensions of the truck and trailer.

It has a towing capacity of 10,340 pounds, which is less than the truck’s maximum of 12,000-pounds in other configurations. The maximum payload for the Tundra Capstone is 1,485 pounds.

Buyers can choose from Wind Chill Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red and Blueprint exterior paint colors.

It is well equipped and appointed with standard automatic running boards, a panoramic moonroof, front door acoustic squares, a leather-trimmed heated steering wheel and semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats.

Toyota has also given multilink rear suspension to the truck. It is available with Adaptive Variable Suspension and Load-Leveling Rear High Control Air Suspension. When buyers choose that device, they have access to the Comfort, Sport S, Sport+ and Custom Drive modes.

The interior of the truck is available only in Black and White color scheme. A dark center console and passenger-side dash are scented with dark American walnut open-pore wood.

The capstone logo is emblazoned on the dash. It lights up when the doors are open.

Toyota has also given the model a full roster of high-tech features including a standard 10-inch heads-up display, a digital rearview mirror, 14-inch infotainment touch screen, dual Bluetooth connectivity, 4G Wi-Fi hot spots, Apple Watch, and more.
