The creepy story behind the viral voicemail pick-up TikTok trend

Molly Dare went viral last week when she shared a TikTok caption titled “Dating in your 40s…” — and Creepy tone shocked over 1.5 million people,

In the video, Dare reacts as she hears a disturbing voicemail from a person calling a second time in a pick-up attempt, terribly wrong.

“It’s calling Dmitry again – the man from the street,” begins the voicemail.

“I left you a message several days ago. I don’t like to leave other messages, but I like you: You are a very beautiful woman, you are very attractive. But I don’t play that game. So, it’s like this kind of works.”

Dmitry gives the listener a deadline of 3 o’clock to return his call before he loses interest. He describes himself as “an absolute catch” who is “very intelligent”, “great in bed” and “makes a lot of money.”

“In fact, I am the fewest person in town who has nothing wrong with that,” he boasts boldly.

Unable to understand why the woman hasn’t called him back, he begins to list possible “psychological issues” that are keeping him from connecting with her.

“Maybe you were abused as a child? Maybe you’re just someone who is overly fearful and has an anxiety disorder? Maybe you’re taking any medications for that? I don’t know. Another issue Maybe, ”suggests Dmitry.

He also tells her that he understands whether she is “psychologically normal”, but does not call because “some terrible thing has happened” in his life.

The video ends abruptly with Dare making fun of the video and exaggerated shocked faces throughout the clip.

She made several more videos mocking the derogatory comments that attracted her viral video and also noted in the comments that the voice message was not actually left for her.

The original audio clip was created by Dr. James Sears, who had used the nickname “Dmitry the Love” when promoting himself as a pick-up artist nearly 10 years earlier.

While the clip she was using was not hers, a wave of misogynistic TikTokers jumped in the comments and questioned why Dare is dating in her 40s.

“Gets totally slaughtered in comments with men telling me I’ve been dating since I was 39,” she wrote in a follow-up videoNoting that “all 40 something is coming to my rescue.”

She also noted that she was “reprimanded for using a trending audio and it was not my own.”

The “Dmitry the Lover” audio clip continues to pop up on social media every few years as people hate Sears’ message, but unfortunately don’t be surprised by the inappropriate statements filled with dating red flags.

The disgraced Canadian doctor lost his medical license in 1992 after being found guilty of professional misconduct, which included “sexual impropriety with patients.” Toronto Star told,

He promoted himself as a pick-up artist, using vulgar and abusive tactics in an attempt to seduce women, including a “Dmitry” voicemail.

And while a dismal amount of women have experienced an offensively arrogant and abusive pick-up attempt at one point or another, many TikTok users are using the clip to mock men like “Dmitry.”

Most Recent Tiktok Videos Using the sound is similar to Dare in which women make fun of men and make shocking facial expressions with captions such as “What does dating in your 30s look like…” or “Dating pool in LA”.

Sears also started his own political party, the unregistered New Constitution Party, which former Canadian Jewish Congress chief executive Bernie Farber described as “an apparent attempt at abominable representation of Jews”.

In January 2019, Sears was found guilty of promoting hatred against women and Jews in his newspaper Your Ward News. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison and then again sentenced to 12 months in prison after allegedly violating the terms of parole by “publicly proposing a gruesome public execution” for Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam in a video circulated on Twitter. Was arrested again in February this year.
