Teams tend to fit neatly into boxing in the NBA. They are what they have and what they don’t. There are franchises that are actively trying to lose, and franchises are heavily taxed on luxury as their windows to the championship require full commitment.

This is not the NFL. Not every team has a chance. Even the Jets won on Sunday.

With that in mind, we present The Daily News NBA Power Rankings in the form of a category:

COMPETITORS

BOSTON CELTICS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Malcolm Brogdon, Danilo Gallinari

KEY LOSSES: Daniel Theis.

They were so close last season and they should only be better with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in the meat of their respective primes. Two concerns: 1) they have already lost the Gallinari in the season to an ACL tear and 2) we are skeptical about continuing to rely on 36-year-old Al Horford, who averaged over 35 minutes in the playoffs.

SOLDERS OF THE GOLDEN STATE

KEY ACCESSORIES: Donte DiVincenzo, Ja Mychal Green

KEY LOSSES: Gary Payton II, Otto Porter

The defending champions return with the same line-up, but a year older, regarding the core that made it through the physical rings in the six finals. Draymond Green’s health and deterioration should be monitored. He was a few steps slower last season. Perhaps another year of recovery will benefit Klay Thompson, who now has Andrew Wiggins to help defend himself. Steph Curry is just Steph Curry. Nothing more needs to be said. Amazing.

Dolce MILWAUKEE

KEY ACCESSORIES: Joe Ingles

KEY LOSSES: Thread

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, MVP of the finals and somehow underrated. In terms of strength and physical domination, he belongs to a conversation with Shaquille O’Neal and Wilt Chamberlain. Bucks are my choice to win the championship.

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

KEY ACCESSORIES: John Wall

KEY LOSSES: Isaiah Hartenstein

We don’t expect much from John Wall at this stage in his career, but the Clippers’ most important addition was technically in the line-up last season. Kawhi Leonard is back for the ACL and knows how to handle the playoffs. Add healthy Paul George and the Clippers have running pieces.

DENVER NUGGETS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Bruce Brown, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

KEY LOSSES: Will Barton, JaMychal Green, Monte Morris

Theoretically, the addition of Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. to the squad with Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon should jump the Nuggets into the upper shell. We’re talking theoretically because Porter Jr. it’s a constant risk of injury, and Murray hasn’t made it all last season. The acquisition of Caldwell-Pope and Bruce Brown was an underappreciated move that should have helped the defense.

PRETENDENTS

WE HAVE WARM

KEY ACCESSORIES: Thread

KEY LOSSES: PJ Tucker, Markieff Morris

We are big supporters of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, but the list is slim after the top-2. Their greatest hope is for Victor Oladipo to discover his All-Star pre-injury form.

Philadelphia 76ERS

KEY ACCESSORIES: PJ Tucker, Montrezl Harrell

KEY LOSSES: Danny Green

He came close to putting the Sixers in a competitive position but was still worried about Joel Embiid’s knees and James Harden’s fall. Tyrese Maxey can counteract these problems with an All-Star Jump.

SUN OF PHENIX

KEY ACCESSORIES: Thread

KEY LOSSES: JaVale McGee

Their owner is suspended for the season and the playmaker demands a more severe punishment. Not a completely harmonious way to enter a training camp. Chris Paul, the quarterback mentioned earlier, is now 37 years old and Father Time is undefeated. The suns will be fine, but we fear they peaked during the 2021 finals.

BROOKLYN NETWORKS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Royce O’Neale, TJ Warren, Markieff Morris

KEY LOSSES: Bruce Brown, Andre Drummond

Speaking of disagreement, the Nets enter a training camp with a star who has demanded their coach and GM fired. It’s been a terrible low season for Kevin Durant. And yet we believe that it will appear and play at the highest level. Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons are more disturbing. The networks can only defeat themselves, and they will likely do so.

DALLAS MAVERICKS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Christian Wood, JaVale McGee

KEY LOSSES: Jalen Brunson

Luka Doncic is a candidate for MVP if she is fit. But the list is devoid of a second star, and the best hope, Jalen Brunson, is left to the free agency. We may be underestimating Christian Wood’s potential, but his production certainly did not translate into a win at previous stops in Detroit and Houston.

CHICAGO BULLS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Goran Dragic, Andre Drummond

KEY LOSSES: Thread

On the one hand, the Bulls should be better after a full season and the return of Patrick Williams and possibly Lonzo Ball. On the other hand, the team has deteriorated compared to last season, not better and should not be assumed that DeMar DeRozan will live up to its production.

ON THE GROWTH

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

KEY ACCESSORIES: Danny Green

KEY LOSSES: Kyle Anderson

They are young, audacious and close to the contenders for the title. Re-signing Tyus Jones and adding Danny Green means the conference finals are a realistic goal, even if their top 3 players Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. – are 23 years old and younger.

Cleveland Knights

KEY ACCESSORIES: Donovan Mitchell

KEY LOSSES: Lauri Markkanen, Collin S*xton

A deal for Mitchell catapulted Cleveland’s rival timeline forward. If Darius Garland and Evan Mobley team up with Mitchell, the cavalrymen are prepared to compete longer at the Eastern Conference.

TORONTO RAPTORY

KEY ACCESSORIES: Otto Porter

KEY LOSSES: Thread

It’s hard to know what to think about the Raptor. We don’t sell on Pascal Siakama as the dominant star in football, but he has enough young midfielders – Scotti Barnes, OG Anunoba and Fred VanVleet in particular – to give him a minor role. Raptorians need something else to jump into the competition, and Masai Ujiri is in doubt if he can find it.

WOODEN WOLVES MINNESOTA

KEY ACCESSORIES: Rudy Gobert, Kyle Anderson

KEY LOSSES: Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverly

He has given up all the capital for Gobert, who provides Karl-Anthony Towns’ much-needed cover in paint. We like the idea and we fully support the future around Anthony Edwards. However, Towns has to find other gear to reach its potential. His circumstances weren’t great, but it is now seven years in the NBA without a playoff win.

Atlanta Hawks

KEY ACCESSORIES: Dejounte Murray, Justin Holiday

KEY LOSSES: Kevin Huerter, Danilo Gallinari, Delon Wright

Last season was a setback for Atlanta’s promotion, but they made a massive move out of season by buying Murray. He should help the fighting defense. Breaking through to the top six in the East, however, is not obvious.

PELICANS NEW ORLEANS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Dyson Daniels (rookie)

KEY LOSSES: Thread

It’s about Zion Williamson. He got maximum contract out of season and now has to stay on court. A good start would be to lose some weight. The Pelicans have another star in Brandon Ingram, so staple is in place if Williamson lives up to his potential.

ANYWHERE ZONE

LOS ANGELES LAKERS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Patrick Beverley, Dennis Schroder, Lonnie Walker

KEY LOSSES: Avery Bradley, Malik Monk, Stanley Johnson, Talen-Horton Tucker

They made a few side moves after last season’s crash, leaving us to wonder how that could work with Russell Westbrook still in the squad. Betting against LeBron James is never wise, but he’s 37 and already promoting his son in the NBA. The Lakers’ brightest path to rejuvenation is with Anthony Davis as he returns to All-NBA form.

WASHINGTON WIZARDS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Will Barton, Monte Morris, Delon Wright, Johnny Davis (rookie)

KEY LOSSES: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Raul Neto, Ish Smith

He re-signed Bradley Beal on a monster contract, but the Wizards are not close to competing for the championship. A successful season would require foresight – Kristaps Porzingis remained healthy and rediscovered his All-Star potential.

KNICKI NEW YORK

KEY ACCESSORIES: Jalen Brunson, Isaiah Hartenstein

KEY LOSSES: Kemba Walker, Alec Burks, Nerlens Noel

The Knicks are better off than the other teams in this category because of their draft capital. This means they can change quickly by discharging bad contracts or dealing with a star. But after donating over $ 430 million to Julius Randle, RJ BarrettJalen Brunson, Evan Fournier and Mitchell Robinson have a hard time putting the ceiling over the pre-tournament.

PORTLAND TRAIL JACKETS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Jerami Grant, Gary Payton II, Shaedon Sharpe (rookie).

KEY LOSSES: Thread

The Blazers will be better than last season, but they are stuck in the void zone as Dame Lillard doesn’t have a jogging buddy. They sell Grant as a second star, but he’s not good enough to outsmart Portland into the battlefield. Until one of their young players (Sharpe or Anfernee Simons) lets go, it’s hard to find a way out of middling.

CHARLOTTE WORSHIP

KEY ACCESSORIES: Thread.

KEY LOSSES: Miles’ Bridges, Montrezl Harrell

Rookie star Miles Bridges was charged with multiple crimes this summer after allegedly att*cking his girlfriend. His future in the NBA is questionable. Hornets owe a lot of money to Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier. Last season, they were rejected in a play-in tournament. We don’t blame Kenny Atkinson for turning down the head coach job.

THE SACRAMENT OF KINGS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Kevin Huerter, Malik Monk, Keegan Murray (newcomer).

KEY LOSSES: Justin Holiday, Donte DiVincenzo

One of these years, Kings will be in play-offs again. But that won’t happen in 2023. At least Keegan Murray gives them hope.

TANKS

UTAH JAZZ

KEY ACCESSORIES: Malik Beasley, Talen Horton-Tucker, Lauri Markkanen, Collin S*xton

KEY LOSSES: Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, Royce O’Neale.

Danny Ainge slammed the championship window and amassed the first round wrestling. This is a rebuilding manual.

INDIANA PACERS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Bennedict Mathurin (rookie), Daniel Theis.

KEY LOSSES: TJ Warren, Malcolm Brogdon

The Pacers gave up mid last season and now they have no problem being bad. They can sell Tyrese Haliburton and Mathurin as part of the future.

DETROIT PISTONS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Alec Burks, Jalen Duren (rookie), Jaden Ivey (rookie), Nerlens Noel, Kemba Walker

KEY LOSSES: Jerami Grant

With loads of young talent on paper, the Pistons will be a fun watch for the NBA League Pass. But they won’t win many games. At least not yet. Wait two more years.

MAGIC ORLANDO

KEY ACCESSORIES: Paolo Banchero (rookie).

KEY LOSSES: Thread

Cole Anthony is cool, but there aren’t many reasons to watch the hapless Magic other than number 1 overall for Banchero. It will be a while for Orlando to make a difference again. It’s Disney on Ice.

HOUSTON ROCKETS

KEY ACCESSORIES: Jabari Smith Jr. (novice).

KEY LOSSES: John Wall, Christian Wood

The rockets followed the refueling route two years ago, trading with James Harden. Now they are in the spotlight, piling losses and a ton of future drafts.

SAN ANTONIO OSTROGI

KEY ACCESSORIES: Jeremy Sochan (rookie)

KEY LOSSES: Dejounte Murray

It’s hard to believe that the Spurs are adopting a refueling stance at the end of Gregg Popovich’s career. But here we are: Popovich’s team has left the playoffs for three years in a row and will not be returning this season.

OKC thunder

KEY ACCESSORIES: Chet Holmgren (rookie)

KEY LOSSES: Thread

The hole in the refueling strategy was revealed when Holmgren injured his foot while playing summer soccer. You must be wondering how long Shai-Gilgeous Alexander waits before asking for a replacement.
