The Red Sox and Yankees may be in contention to sign Senga along with several other teams.

The Bruins defeated the Lightning 5-3 on Monday, pushing the team’s record to 17-2-0 this season. Boston will face the Florida Panthers on Wednesday at 7 p.m

Also on Monday, the Celtics saw their nine-game streak end with a 121–107 loss to the Bulls.

In international news, the United States drew 1-1 with Wales in the 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage opener. Tim Weah scored for the United States and LAFC striker Gareth Bale’s penalty equalized the game in the second half.

The United States will face England on Friday (2pm EST) in another group stage match.

Red Sox and Kodai Seng: Of the Red Sox’s many off-season priorities, fixing the team’s starting rotation is high on the list. Boston ranked near bottom of the league (4.53) in the ERA team in 2022.

One notable possibility is 29-year-old Kodai Senga, a Japanese free agent. A right-hander who throws in the mid-to-late 90s and also owns a curve ball and fork (arguably his best throw), Senga went 11-6 with a 1.89 ERA in 2022 as a member of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in the Nippon Professional Liga . He had 159 strikeouts in 148 innings.

On Monday, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported that both the Red Sox and Yankees had “established contact” with Senga’s representatives.

Senga, Morosi noted, “is not tied to postage or download fees, which has broadened its market.”

Senga is one of several rookie pitchers the Red Sox have reportedly shown interest in what can be a busy off-season.

Little things: Patrice Bergeron scored his 1,000th career point on Monday. Can you name the other three Bruins in team history who have accomplished this feat?

(Answer below).

Hint: Bobby Orr is not one of the answers.

More from Boston.com:

David Pasrnak looked at the fan who gave him the finger: After scoring the goal that gave the Bruins a 5-1 win over the Lightning on Monday, Pasrnak celebrated his goal but found himself facing a Tampa Bay fan making a gesture. Pasrnak held his gaze as the fan left his hand.

“It was quite fun” Pasrnak told Boston Hockey Now’s Joe Haggerty after the game. “You could tell he felt bad about it because he pulled it off pretty quickly.”

That day: It is officially 10 years since the iconic “kick asswhen Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez ran into his own lineman, he missed the ball and the Patriots scored with a 32-yard return from Steve Gregory.

It was immediately taken as stunning, unforgettable Poor Jets game. Not only did the moment go viral, it stayed number one on ESPN’s “Not Top 10” list for 40 straight weeks, eventually having to retire at the start of the next NFL season.

To make matters worse for New York – a seemingly impossible task after Sanchez’s foul – the Jets lost the opening game and Julian Edelman caught him in the air before returning for another touchdown. In less than 10 seconds, the Patriots scored two fumble touchdowns to double their lead to 28-0.

A 56-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Edelman later in the quarter ended a remarkable 35-point second quarter en route to 49-19 Thanksgiving Day tour.

Daily highlight: In a stunning upset on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina 2-1 in the World Cup. Salem Al-Dawsari scored the decisive goal with a nice shot into the far post.

Answer Trivia: Ray Bourque (1506), Johnny Bucyk (1339) and Phil Esposito (1012)
