The woman was also shot while running from the would-be car thief and three other men who were with him at the time of the incident, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The 23-year-old woman, who has not been publicly identified, had a concealed carry permit and used her gun to defend herself, police said Newsweek. The incident began shortly after 2:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday as the woman was sitting in her vehicle, which at the time was parked along the 1300 block of East 89th Street in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.

As the woman sat in her car, police said four men got out of another vehicle that was near the woman’s parked car. Police described the second vehicle as a black sedan, but did not identify either man’s name or age.

After exiting the sedan, one of the men approached the woman’s vehicle and showed her a gun in an attempt to break into it. Police said the woman used a concealed weapon and shot the man in the head.

After shooting the man, the woman fled the vehicle and was shot in the left shoulder by another man in the group, police said. The woman was described by police as being in “good condition” when she was transported to Trinity Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Police said the man was in “critical condition” when he was transported by the Chicago Fire Department to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Three others “escaped and are not in custody,” police said. Detectives are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Vehicle thefts have increased in Chicago this year. According According to Chicago-based television news station WBBM-TV, there were more than 3,000 vehicle thefts last month, making October the month with the highest number of auto thefts in Chicago in about 20 years.

As of November 20, Chicago Police Department figures showed that 17,700 vehicle thefts had been reported since the beginning of the year. This figure represents a 93 percent increase over the total number of vehicle thefts reported in 2021 at the same time last year, and a 104 percent increase in the number of vehicle thefts reported to the police in 2020 by the end of November.
